Picking up Chicks at the County Fair

Yep, I’m that kind of guy. I guess I just like the kind of chicks that hang out at the fair. What can I say?

HaHa… actually I hope you know I’m just playing with words there! We got a small batch of chicks (that’s baby chickens… just in case you didn’t know) from the County Fair. What happens at the fair is that they have an educational booth with eggs in a big see through incubator. These eggs hatch and the kids all go nuts. They love it. For the few days that the exhibit run they must hatch a few hundred chicks. These chicks are put in a large open display for the kids to look at.

If you find yourself at a County Fair with this type of exhibit, ask the volunteer if the chicks are for sale afterwards. At our Fair they have a list that you can put your name on. At closing time on the final day you stand in line ready to pay $0.50 per chick! Wow, that’s cheap 🙂

Enjoy here a short video showing the chicks after a few weeks.

and here is the young rooster after finding his voice!

How to Care for your new baby chickens in Canaseraga, New York Baby chicks are quite charming and challenging to resist, but it's best to prepare for their arrival before you obtain them. Prepare first by compiling not just the right products, but additionally the correct expertise to look after them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably easy, you just have to give them with the following: A clean and warm habitat Plenty of food and also water Interest and love Habitat Your environment can be a straightforward box, aquarium, cat service provider, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels as well as coverings (with no loosened strings!) to begin, as well as after a few weeks use straw over paper. Note: Avoid making use of only paper or other sandal surfaces-- or your chicks legs could grow malformed. You additionally require something to dish out food as well as water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water recipe from the feed store, or a pickle container lid for food as well as an animal bird water dispenser from a pet shop. Additionally, as the chicks age you can introduce a perch right into the environment to get them trained on perching. Heat To keep your chicks warm you have to offer them with a heat source. This can be as straightforward as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from an equipment shop, or an infrared reptile heat light bulb additionally function extremely well (my suggestion). Chicks require this heat 24/7 until their downy fluff is replaced with feathers (which could use up to two months). The recently hatched out require a temperature level in between 90 as well as 100 degrees, and every week this can be decreased by roughly 5 levels or so. The heat source need to get on merely one side of the cage to permit chicks a range of temperature levels. The chicks are your ideal thermometer- if they are hiding in the opposite edge of your warmth light, you should decrease the temperature level. If they are smothering each various other under the warmth (not merely snuggling), you have to add some heat. House cleaning Tidiness is essential and it keeps your chicks healthy and balanced. Be sure to transform the bed linen usually and constantly supply clean food and also water Food and water. Chicks grow very fast which calls for lots of tidy food and water. Provide sufficient at all times as well as inspect usually to stop thirsty as well as starving chicks. Chick food is various than grown-up chicken food, and also it is available in both medicated and non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the initial two months, after that change to a grower food (~ 17 % protein) for another 2 months, and after that to a slightly lower protein feed or a layer feed (if you have layers). Soil Some chicks like to get a head start on taking filth baths, while others will not occupy that task till they are older. If you have the area in your chick unit, introduce a tray of sand or dust for them to wash in. Attention and also love There are a few advantages to spending quality time with your chicks. First of all, they will probably bond with you as well as not run away as grownups. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and enjoy their behavior, you can catch illness or various other troubles earlier. Keep an eye out for wheezing, limping, or other harmful indicators. Make sure to also look at their poop, as diarrhea could cause matted feathers as well as clogged cloaca. Last but not least, it is important to keep an eye out for social problems, such as the tiniest chick obtaining picked on. Empty nest disorder So your chicks are currently totally feathery and also its time for them to leave the safety and security of your home and relocate outside into a coop. Take a look at our part on chicken cages to find out more about cages and also proper cage environments.
