A Return to Chickens

It’s been a while. Probably a year in fact since we last had chickens.

We’ve had them off and on since we moved to the farm but, as I’ve told you before, paid us a few visits and then when I got pregnant with Baby G, Hubster sold them because, and I quote, he didn’t want to look after my dog, sheep, rabbits AND chickens while I was in confinement. A) what century are we in. Confinement. And B) why just the chickens?

Anyway I reluctantly allowed him to sell them. However the farm just doesn’t seem like a farm without hens so I had one of my small coops mended and yesterday, the children and I went to pick two ladies from a flock at another farm up the road.

Meet Beryl and Sylvia.

Beryl is a Black Rock and Sylvia (the more silvery one of the two) is a Speckeldy.

I only have one photo so far because the seemed a bit shy so I just left the with food and water to settle in.

I am so happy we have chickens again and I am going to encourage Boo to go and collect the eggs.

If you have ever wanted to keep chickens yourself, here is my

All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. How to Care for your new baby chickens in Alfred, New York Baby chicks are very adorable and challenging to withstand, yet it's ideal to plan for their arrival before you get them. Prepare initially by gathering not just the correct products, but additionally the correct knowledge to look after them. Raising baby chicks is fairly straightforward, you just should offer them with the following: A tidy as well as warm and comfortable habitat Plenty of food as well as water Attention as well as love Environment Your environment can be a simple box, fish tank, pet cat service provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels as well as blankets (without any loosened strings!) to start, and after a couple of weeks use straw over newspaper. Note: Avoid utilizing just paper or other sandal surfaces-- or your chicks legs could grow malformed. You additionally need something to dish out food and water in, such as a chicken feeder and water dish from the feed store, or a pickle container lid for food as well as a pet dog bird water dispenser from a pet shop. Likewise, as the chicks grow older you can present a perch right into the environment to obtain them trained on perching. Warmth To keep your chicks heat you have to offer them with a heat source. This could be as basic as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from an equipment store, or an infrared reptile warmth bulb additionally function extremely well (my suggestion). Chicks need this warmth 24/7 up until their downy fluff is replaced with feathers (which could use up to 2 months). The newly hatched out need a temperature level between 90 and also 100 levels, and weekly this can be decreased by around 5 degrees approximately. The heat source must be on just one side of the cage to permit chicks an array of temperature levels. The chicks are your finest thermometer- if they are hiding in the contrary corner of your warmth lamp, you need to lower the temperature level. If they are surrounding each various other under the heat (not simply cuddling), you need to add some heat. House cleaning Sanitation is vital and also it maintains your chicks healthy. Be sure to alter the bed linens commonly and always supply tidy food as well as water Food and water. Chicks grow very quick which requires a lot of tidy food and water. Provide enough whatsoever times and also examine commonly to avoid thirsty as well as starving chicks. Chick food is different compared to adult chicken food, as well as it is available in both medicated and also non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the first two months, then change to a grower food (~ 17 % protein) for one more 2 months, and then to a somewhat lower healthy protein feed or a layer feed (if you have levels). Dirt Some chicks prefer to obtain a head start on taking filth bathrooms, while others won't use up that task up until they are older. If you have the area in your chick enclosure, introduce a tray of sand or filth for them to wash in. Interest and love There are a few advantages to spending quality time with your chicks. Firstly, they will probably bond with you as well as not run away as adults. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and also see their habits, you could capture illness or other problems previously. Watch out for hissing, limping, or various other undesirable indications. Make sure to also take a look at their poop, as looseness of the bowels could bring about matted plumes and obstructed cloaca. Last but not least, it is important to keep an eye out for social issues, such as the smallest chick getting badgered. Empty nest syndrome So your chicks are currently completely feathered and its time for them to leave the safety and security of your home and also relocate outside into a coop.
