Picking up Chicks at the County Fair

Yep, I’m that kind of guy. I guess I just like the kind of chicks that hang out at the fair. What can I say?

HaHa… actually I hope you know I’m just playing with words there! We got a small batch of chicks (that’s baby chickens… just in case you didn’t know) from the County Fair. What happens at the fair is that they have an educational booth with eggs in a big see through incubator. These eggs hatch and the kids all go nuts. They love it. For the few days that the exhibit run they must hatch a few hundred chicks. These chicks are put in a large open display for the kids to look at.

If you find yourself at a County Fair with this type of exhibit, ask the volunteer if the chicks are for sale afterwards. At our Fair they have a list that you can put your name on. At closing time on the final day you stand in line ready to pay $0.50 per chick! Wow, that’s cheap 🙂

Enjoy here a short video showing the chicks after a few weeks.

and here is the young rooster after finding his voice!

How to Care for your new baby chickens in Yeso, New Mexico Baby chicks are extremely cute and challenging to stand up to, however it's finest to plan for their arrival before you obtain them. Prepare first by gathering not only the appropriate materials, but also the correct knowledge to take care of them. Raising baby chicks is relatively easy, you merely need to offer them with the following: A clean as well as warm environment Plenty of food and also water Interest and love Environment Your habitat can be a straightforward box, aquarium, pet cat service provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and also blankets (with no loosened strings!) to begin, as well as after a few weeks make use of straw over newspaper. Note: Avoid utilizing just newspaper or other slipper surfaces-- or your chicks legs could expand malformed. You likewise require something to serve up food as well as water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water recipe from the feed store, or a pickle container cover for food and also a family pet bird water dispenser from an animal shop. Also, as the chicks age you can introduce a perch right into the environment to obtain them educated on setting down. Heat To maintain your chicks warm you have to give them with a warmth source. This can be as basic as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design light from a hardware shop, or an infrared reptile warmth light bulb also function very well (my referral). Chicks require this warmth 24/7 until their downy fluff is changed with plumes (which could use up to two months). The newly hatched out need a temperature between 90 and also 100 degrees, and every week this could be minimized by about 5 levels or so. The heat resource should be on simply one side of the cage to enable chicks an array of temperature levels. The chicks are your ideal thermostat- if they are hiding in the opposite edge of your warmth lamp, you need to decrease the temperature level. If they are surrounding each other under the heat (not just cuddling), you need to add some warmth. Home cleaning Tidiness is vital and also it keeps your chicks healthy and balanced. Make certain to alter the bed linen frequently and also consistently supply clean food as well as water Food and also water. Chicks expand extremely quickly which needs a lot of clean food and water. Offer sufficient whatsoever times and inspect typically to prevent thirsty as well as hungry chicks. Chick food is different than adult chicken food, and also it comes in both medicated and non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the first 2 months, then switch to a grower food (~ 17 % protein) for one more 2 months, and afterwards to a slightly lower protein feed or a level feed (if you have layers). Dirt Some chicks want to obtain a running start on taking dust bathrooms, while others will not use up that task until they are older. If you have the room in your chick room, introduce a tray of sand or dirt for them to wash in. Attention as well as love There are a few advantages to spending quality time with your chicks. To start with, they will more than likely bond with you and not flee as adults. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and also see their behavior, you could capture disease or various other problems earlier. Keep an eye out for wheezing, hopping, or other unhealthy indications. Make sure to likewise consider their poop, as diarrhea can bring about matted feathers as well as obstructed cloaca. Finally, it is essential to watch out for social problems, such as the littlest chick getting teased. Vacant nest syndrome So your chicks are now completely feathered and its time for them to leave the safety and security of your residence and also relocate outside into a coop.
