A Return to Chickens

It’s been a while. Probably a year in fact since we last had chickens.

We’ve had them off and on since we moved to the farm but, as I’ve told you before, paid us a few visits and then when I got pregnant with Baby G, Hubster sold them because, and I quote, he didn’t want to look after my dog, sheep, rabbits AND chickens while I was in confinement. A) what century are we in. Confinement. And B) why just the chickens?

Anyway I reluctantly allowed him to sell them. However the farm just doesn’t seem like a farm without hens so I had one of my small coops mended and yesterday, the children and I went to pick two ladies from a flock at another farm up the road.

Meet Beryl and Sylvia.

Beryl is a Black Rock and Sylvia (the more silvery one of the two) is a Speckeldy.

I only have one photo so far because the seemed a bit shy so I just left the with food and water to settle in.

I am so happy we have chickens again and I am going to encourage Boo to go and collect the eggs.

If you have ever wanted to keep chickens yourself, here is my

All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in La Loma, New Mexico Baby chicks are very cute and challenging to withstand, however it's best to prepare for their arrival before you obtain them. Prepare first by gathering not just the proper materials, yet likewise the correct knowledge to look after them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably straightforward, you simply have to give them with the following: A clean and also warm habitat A lot of food and also water Interest as well as love Environment Your habitat could be a straightforward box, fish tank, pet cat provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and blankets (without any loose strings!) to start, as well as after a few weeks utilize straw over newspaper. Keep in mind: Avoid making use of only paper or other sandal surfaces-- or your chicks legs can grow malformed. You additionally need something to provide food as well as water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water meal from the feed shop, or a pickle jar cover for food and a pet bird water dispenser from a pet dog store. Likewise, as the chicks age you can introduce a perch into the habitat to get them trained on perching. Warmth To maintain your chicks heat you should offer them with a warmth source. This could be as easy as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style lamp from a hardware store, or an infrared reptile warmth light bulb likewise work very well (my suggestion). Chicks need this warmth 24/7 till their downy fluff is replaced with plumes (which could occupy to two months). The recently hatched need a temperature level between 90 and 100 levels, and weekly this can be lowered by around 5 levels approximately. The heat resource need to get on just one side of the cage to permit chicks a range of temperatures. The chicks are your ideal thermostat- if they are concealing in the contrary corner of your heat light, you need to minimize the temperature. If they are surrounding each various other under the warmth (not merely curling up), you need to put some heat. Home cleaning Cleanliness is essential as well as it maintains your chicks healthy. Make certain to change the bed linens usually and also always give tidy food as well as water Food and water. Chicks expand quite fast which needs a lot of tidy food and also water. Give enough whatsoever times and inspect typically to avoid thirsty as well as starving chicks. Chick food is various compared to adult chicken food, as well as it can be found in both medicated and non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the first two months, then switch to a raiser food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for one more 2 months, and then to a slightly reduced protein feed or a layer feed (if you have layers). Dirt Some chicks prefer to get a running start on taking dust baths, while others won't take up that activity until they are older. If you have the room in your chick enclosure, introduce a tray of sand or filth for them to bathe in. Interest and love There are a couple of advantages to hanging out with your chicks. First off, they will most likely bond with you as well as not run away as grownups. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and also view their actions, you could capture ailment or various other troubles earlier. Watch out for wheezing, limping, or various other undesirable signs. Make sure to additionally take a look at their poop, as diarrhea can bring about matted feathers as well as clogged cloaca. Finally, it is very important to keep an eye out for social issues, such as the littlest chick obtaining teased. Vacant nest syndrome So your chicks are now completely feathery and also its time for them to leave the safety and security of your residence and also move outside right into a cage. Take a look at our section on chicken cages for more information concerning coops and also appropriate coop environments.
