On Saturday, we butchered 35 meat chickens in 3 1/2  hours!! It was a lot of fun…but a little cold.    Daddy took care of the heads, wings and legs. Jessie, Lyssa and Annie skinned them and Suzanna and Cassie gutted them. At the end we all cut up the pieces and bagged them. Bekah and Charissa were our photographers!!    Here are a few pictures…

NMTypically hatcheries online offer both standard breeds and bantams. Bantams are fun hardy little chickens, they lay tiny eggs that kids especially love collecting. Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Hillsboro New Mexico * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Hillsboro New Mexico is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Hillsboro, New Mexico Baby chicks are extremely adorable and tough to withstand, yet it's ideal to prepare for their arrival before you get them. Prepare initially by compiling not only the proper materials, but additionally the appropriate knowledge to care for them. Raising baby chicks is relatively simple, you just have to supply them with the following: A clean and warm habitat Lots of food and water Focus and love Habitat Your environment can be a simple box, fish tank, pet cat service provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and also coverings (without loosened strings!) to begin, and after a few weeks use straw over newspaper. Note: Avoid utilizing only paper or various other sandal surfaces-- or your chicks legs could grow malformed. You additionally need something to serve up food and water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water recipe from the feed store, or a pickle container cover for food and a pet bird water dispenser from a pet store. Likewise, as the chicks age you can introduce a perch right into the habitat to get them educated on perching. Heat To maintain your chicks warm you need to give them with a warmth source. This could be as basic as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design lamp from a hardware store, or an infrared reptile warmth light bulb additionally work effectively (my suggestion). Chicks need this warmth 24/7 up until their downy fluff is replaced with feathers (which can take up to 2 months). The recently hatched require a temperature level between 90 and 100 degrees, as well as each week this could be decreased by about 5 degrees approximately. The warmth source must be on just one side of the cage to allow chicks a range of temperature levels. The chicks are your best thermometer- if they are hiding in the opposite edge of your warmth lamp, you have to decrease the temperature level. If they are smothering each various other under the heat (not merely cuddling), you should put some warmth. House cleaning Sanitation is crucial as well as it maintains your chicks healthy. Be sure to change the bedding typically and also always provide tidy food and also water Food and water. Chicks grow very fast which calls for lots of tidy food as well as water. Give sufficient at all times as well as check often to stop dehydrated and also starving chicks. Chick food is various than grown-up chicken food, and it comes in both medicated and also non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the first two months, after that switch to a grower food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for one more 2 months, then to a slightly reduced protein feed or a layer feed (if you have layers). Dirt Some chicks like to obtain a running start on taking filth bathrooms, while others won't occupy that activity till they are older. If you have the room in your chick enclosure, introduce a tray of sand or dust for them to shower in. Interest and love There are a few benefits to spending quality time with your chicks. To start with, they will most likely bond with you as well as not run away as adults. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and watch their habits, you could capture disease or other issues earlier. Watch out for hissing, limping, or other undesirable indicators. Make certain to additionally check out their poop, as looseness of the bowels can result in matted feathers and obstructed cloaca. Finally, it is important to watch out for social problems, such as the littlest chick obtaining teased. Empty nest disorder So your chicks are now completely feathery as well as its time for them to leave the safety and security of your home and relocate outside into a cage. Look into our area on chicken cages for more information concerning cages and appropriate coop environments.
