Raising Cornish Cross Chickens – Week 4

Our 10 Cornish Cross meat chickens are now a month old…..one more month to go!

You can read why we chose this breed and see pictures of their growth on these posts:  – –

They are outside full time now and love to munch on the grass!

They are still much more active than I expected.  I have read that all they do is stand or lay down at the feeders and eat all day.  Ours are not like that at all, maybe it’s because they have room to run and fresh grass to eat, or maybe they just haven’t got to that point yet?

They are ugly little buggers and not very bright!  I weighed one a couple days ago and it was almost 2 pounds.  They are going through the feed pretty quickly now, I think it’s going to cost more than I originally expected to feed them.  But I also expected to loose a couple and so far no casualties.  The five that my mom took to her house are also doing very well.  Thanks for following along on our meat chicken journey.

NMTypically hatcheries online offer both standard breeds and bantams. Bantams are fun hardy little chickens, they lay tiny eggs that kids especially love collecting. Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Cedar Crest New Mexico * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. If you want a mixture of both male and female then choosing a "straight run" will save you money and you will get a mixture of male and female chicks. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Cedar Crest New Mexico is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Cedar Crest, New Mexico Baby chicks are very charming and also difficult to stand up to, however it's finest to plan for their arrival prior to you get them. Prepare initially by collecting not just the correct materials, but additionally the appropriate knowledge to care for them. Raising baby chicks is fairly easy, you just need to offer them with the following: A tidy as well as warm and comfortable environment Plenty of food and also water Attention and also love Habitat Your environment can be a simple box, aquarium, feline service provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and blankets (without loosened strings!) to start, as well as after a couple of weeks make use of straw over paper. Note: Avoid using only newspaper or various other slipper surfaces-- or your chicks legs can expand malformed. You likewise need something to provide food as well as water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water recipe from the feed shop, or a pickle container lid for food as well as a pet dog bird water dispenser from an animal shop. Also, as the chicks get older you could present a perch right into the environment to get them educated on perching. Heat To keep your chicks heat you have to supply them with a heat resource. This can be as simple as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design lamp from an equipment shop, or an infrared reptile warmth bulb also work effectively (my recommendation). Chicks need this heat 24/7 up until their downy fluff is changed with plumes (which could occupy to 2 months). The freshly hatched out require a temperature level in between 90 and also 100 levels, and also every week this can be decreased by approximately 5 levels approximately. The heat resource must get on simply one side of the cage to enable chicks an array of temperatures. The chicks are your ideal thermometer- if they are hiding in the other edge of your warmth lamp, you have to minimize the temperature. If they are surrounding each other under the heat (not just curling up), you have to put some warmth. Home cleaning Tidiness is vital as well as it maintains your chicks healthy. Be sure to alter the bedding commonly and constantly supply clean food and water Food and also water. Chicks grow extremely quickly which requires plenty of clean food and water. Provide sufficient at all times as well as check commonly to prevent dehydrated and also starving chicks. Chick food is various than grown-up chicken food, as well as it comes in both medicated and also non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the first 2 months, then change to a raiser food (~ 17 % protein) for an additional 2 months, and then to a somewhat lower protein feed or a level feed (if you have layers). Dirt Some chicks want to get a head start on taking filth baths, while others will not occupy that activity up until they are older. If you have the room in your chick room, introduce a tray of sand or filth for them to bathe in. Attention and also love There are a couple of advantages to hanging out with your chicks. To start with, they will most likely bond with you and not run away as adults. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily as well as watch their habits, you can catch disease or various other troubles previously. Keep an eye out for wheezing, hopping, or other unhealthy signs. Make sure to also look at their poop, as looseness of the bowels could result in matted plumes and also clogged cloaca. Last but not least, it is important to look out for social concerns, such as the littlest chick obtaining teased. Vacant nest syndrome So your chicks are currently fully feathery as well as its time for them to leave the safety of your house and relocate outside into a cage. Take a look at our section on chicken coops for more information regarding coops and also proper cage habitats.
