Picking up Chicks at the County Fair

Yep, I’m that kind of guy. I guess I just like the kind of chicks that hang out at the fair. What can I say?

HaHa… actually I hope you know I’m just playing with words there! We got a small batch of chicks (that’s baby chickens… just in case you didn’t know) from the County Fair. What happens at the fair is that they have an educational booth with eggs in a big see through incubator. These eggs hatch and the kids all go nuts. They love it. For the few days that the exhibit run they must hatch a few hundred chicks. These chicks are put in a large open display for the kids to look at.

If you find yourself at a County Fair with this type of exhibit, ask the volunteer if the chicks are for sale afterwards. At our Fair they have a list that you can put your name on. At closing time on the final day you stand in line ready to pay $0.50 per chick! Wow, that’s cheap 🙂

Enjoy here a short video showing the chicks after a few weeks.

and here is the young rooster after finding his voice!

How to Care for your new baby chickens in Capitan, New Mexico Baby chicks are very charming as well as tough to resist, yet it's finest to prepare for their arrival before you get them. Prepare first by compiling not only the right materials, however likewise the proper expertise to look after them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably simple, you just need to provide them with the following: A tidy and also warm and comfortable habitat Lots of food and water Interest and also love Environment Your habitat can be a straightforward box, aquarium, cat provider, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and coverings (without loose strings!) to begin, as well as after a couple of weeks make use of straw over paper. Note: Avoid making use of just paper or various other sandal surface areas-- or your chicks legs can grow malformed. You additionally need something to serve up food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water dish from the feed shop, or a pickle container lid for food and also a family pet bird water dispenser from a family pet shop. Also, as the chicks get older you can introduce a perch right into the environment to obtain them trained on perching. Warmth To maintain your chicks warm you should give them with a heat source. This can be as straightforward as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design lamp from an equipment store, or an infrared reptile warmth bulb likewise function extremely well (my referral). Chicks need this heat 24/7 till their downy fluff is replaced with feathers (which can occupy to two months). The newly hatched require a temperature level in between 90 and also 100 levels, as well as each week this could be reduced by roughly 5 degrees or so. The warmth resource should be on just one side of the cage to permit chicks a range of temperatures. The chicks are your finest thermometer- if they are concealing in the opposite corner of your warmth lamp, you have to lower the temperature. If they are smothering each various other under the heat (not simply curling up), you have to put some warmth. House cleaning Cleanliness is essential as well as it keeps your chicks healthy. Make sure to alter the bedding typically and always offer tidy food and also water Food and water. Chicks grow very quickly which requires a lot of tidy food as well as water. Offer enough in any way times and also check usually to stop parched as well as starving chicks. Chick food is various than adult chicken food, and it comes in both medicated and non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the initial two months, after that switch over to a grower food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for another 2 months, and afterwards to a somewhat reduced healthy protein feed or a layer feed (if you have layers). Dirt Some chicks want to obtain a head start on taking filth bathrooms, while others won't take up that activity till they are older. If you have the space in your chick unit, present a tray of sand or dirt for them to bathe in. Interest as well as love There are a few benefits to spending time with your chicks. First of all, they will probably bond with you and not flee as grownups. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and also enjoy their behavior, you could catch disease or other problems earlier. Keep an eye out for hissing, hopping, or various other unhealthy indications. Make sure to additionally consider their poop, as diarrhea could lead to matted feathers as well as clogged cloaca. Last but not least, it is important to look out for social concerns, such as the tiniest chick obtaining teased. Vacant nest disorder So your chicks are now fully feathered and also its time for them to leave the safety and security of your home and move outside right into a coop. Take a look at our part on chicken cages to find out more concerning coops and also proper cage environments.
