Building a Chicken Coop

Hey everyone, it’s been awhile since I posted anything about our life with chickens. As you may know about 6 weeks ago our family decided to adopt some baby chicks so we could get fresh organic eggs. I think now that we have chickens it’s more of having them as pets. =) I never realized how sweet they could be and the different personalities they could carry.  A lot has gone on since we have gotten them, both sad and happy stories but those will come in another post. Today I’m sharing with you our day when we built our chicken coop.

I’m not very creative when it comes to pulling something out of my head as far as building and neither is my hubby. If he had a piece of paper with how to build and what you need for materials we would be happy as a clam. We knew we had to build a coop for the chickens but wasn’t sure which way to go about it. We live in the city and can only have hens so our space is limited. None of the stores around here carried any chicken coops for sale so we browsed ebay and found a cute chicken coop that we ended up purchasing.

It came in multiple pieces and with some pretty crappy instructions actually. A couple of pieces were broken or cracked which kind of sucked for the amount we paid for it. Luckily the ebay seller reimbursed us for some of the cost.

We were able to put it together easily in about 4 hours given that we had to make modifications to it and fix what arrived broken.

I think it looks really cute and the chickens enjoy it.

Thanks for stopping by and be on the look out for our next chicken post, “Building a Chicken Run.”

Chicken Coop Enclosures in Stratford, New Jersey

Generally these mass produced models are created of rapid grown wood - come the first decrease of rainfall they swell, leaving you either barricading a door that will not shut, or ripping the door furniture off in a vain effort to launch the squawking inhabitants. The first warm day indicates the hardwood dries and also cracks, the felt roof bubbles as well as boils, and come nightfall the hens choose not to enter. This is not because of their frustration at the decrease of their when desirable apartment but considering that the hovel is now a place for, and probably abounding, the fowl keeper's nemesis, red mite. Add on the fact that it stated on the blurb that it would match four huge chickens when that stocking density was based on the Circle Line at 5pm on a Friday, and also what are you left with? A number of hinges as well as some kindling. A good coop for thee to 4 birds must cost you approximately ₤ 300 though this can depend upon whether you elect for a cost-free standing house or one with a run attached. Assuming you are varying your birds in a big space and also the pop opening door allows sufficient for the type you maintain, after that the major demands of housing boil down to three points which will certainly define the variety of birds your house will hold; perches, nest boxes and also ventilation. Many types of chicken will certainly perch when they visit roost in the evening, this perch must ideally be 5-8cm large with smoothed off sides so the foot sits pleasantly on it. The perch must be above the nest box access as chickens will certainly additionally normally try to find the highest point to perch. A perch below that will have the birds roosting in the nest box overnight (which is by the way when they generate one of the most poo) resulting in stained eggs the list below day. They should not however be so high off the flooring of your house that leg injuries might occur when the bird comes down in the early morning. Chickens need concerning 20cm of perch each (in small types this is certainly less), plus if greater than one perch is set up in your house they should be more than 30cm apart. They will certainly hunker up with their next-door neighbors however are not that keen on roosting with a beak in the bloomers of the bird in front. Preferably your home ought to have a least one nest box for every three birds as well as these should be off the ground and also in the darkest location of your home. Your home ought to have appropriate ventilation: without it then condensation will certainly develop every evening, also in the chilliest of weather. Understand, air flow deals with the principle of warm air leaving via a high void attracting cooler air in from a reduced void - it's not a collection of holes on other wall surfaces of your house and at the exact same level, this is what's referred to as a draft. If you have a house with a run attached then the factors above are still true, but you ought to also think about the run dimension. The EU maximum legal equipping density for a cost-free array bird is (and allow's encounter it, one of the motivations for keeping some hens at home is potentially boosted or far better welfare) 2,500 birds each hectare, that's maximum one bird each 4m made even. Take a close consider a few of the bargain homes - it could well be your house has the appropriate perches, proper air flow and sufficient nest boxes for a reasonable variety of birds, however will each of the chickens have anything greater than an A4 sized piece of ground to spend the day on? Therefore as the claiming goes, "you get what you spend for". You may assume you've got a deal, however you and also your group could possibly rue the day you did. Acquisition the appropriate house as well as it will last for a couple of decades, otherwise longer offered the correct treatment. In the long run your fowl as well as your fowl keeping experience will be much the far better for it.
