Building a Chicken Coop

Hey everyone, it’s been awhile since I posted anything about our life with chickens. As you may know about 6 weeks ago our family decided to adopt some baby chicks so we could get fresh organic eggs. I think now that we have chickens it’s more of having them as pets. =) I never realized how sweet they could be and the different personalities they could carry.  A lot has gone on since we have gotten them, both sad and happy stories but those will come in another post. Today I’m sharing with you our day when we built our chicken coop.

I’m not very creative when it comes to pulling something out of my head as far as building and neither is my hubby. If he had a piece of paper with how to build and what you need for materials we would be happy as a clam. We knew we had to build a coop for the chickens but wasn’t sure which way to go about it. We live in the city and can only have hens so our space is limited. None of the stores around here carried any chicken coops for sale so we browsed ebay and found a cute chicken coop that we ended up purchasing.

It came in multiple pieces and with some pretty crappy instructions actually. A couple of pieces were broken or cracked which kind of sucked for the amount we paid for it. Luckily the ebay seller reimbursed us for some of the cost.

We were able to put it together easily in about 4 hours given that we had to make modifications to it and fix what arrived broken.

I think it looks really cute and the chickens enjoy it.

Thanks for stopping by and be on the look out for our next chicken post, “Building a Chicken Run.”

More often than not these standardized models are constructed of fast grown wood - come the very first decrease of rain they swell, leaving you either barricading a door that won't shut, or ripping the doorway furniture off in a vain attempt to launch the squawking citizens. The initial warm day suggests the timber dries and cracks, the felt roofing bubbles and also boils, and also come nightfall the hens refuse to enter. This is not because of their frustration at the decline of their as soon as attractive home but considering that the hovel is now a sanctuary for, and possibly crawling with, the poultry keeper's bane, red mite. Add on that it said on the blurb that it would certainly fit 4 huge chickens when that equipping density was based on the Circle Line at 5pm on a Friday, as well as exactly what are you left with? A few joints and some kindling. A respectable coop for thee to four birds need to cost you approximately ₤ 300 though this can depend upon whether you choose for a complimentary standing house or one with a run connected. Thinking you are ranging your birds in a huge space as well as the pop hole doorway allows sufficient for the breed you maintain, after that the main requirements of housing come down to three factors which will specify the variety of birds the house will hold; perches, nest boxes as well as ventilation. Many types of chicken will certainly perch when they visit roost in the evening, this perch needs to preferably be 5-8cm vast with smoothed off sides so the foot rests comfortably on it. The perch ought to be higher than the nest box access as chickens will additionally naturally look for the acme to perch. A perch less than that will have the birds roosting in the nest box over night (which is by the way when they generate the most poo) leading to stained eggs the list below day. They shouldn't nevertheless be so high off the floor of the house that leg injuries could possibly occur when the bird gets down in the early morning. Chickens require regarding 20cm of perch each (in small breeds this is obviously much less), plus if more than one perch is mounted in your home they must be greater than 30cm apart. They will hunker up with their neighbors but are not that crazy about roosting with a beak in the bloomers of the bird ahead. Ideally your house needs to have a the very least one nest box for every 3 birds as well as these must be off the ground and in the darkest area of your house. Your home ought to have adequate ventilation: without it then condensation will accumulate every evening, even in the chilliest of weather condition. Understand, ventilation works with the principle of warm air leaving with a high gap attracting cooler air in from a lower space - it's not a set of openings on other wall surfaces of your home and also at the exact same degree, this is exactly what's referred to as a draught. If you have a house with a run affixed after that the factors above are still true, however you ought to additionally think about the run dimension. The EU optimum lawful stocking thickness for a totally free array bird is (and allow's face it, among the inspirations for maintaining some chickens in the house is perhaps enhanced or far better welfare) 2,500 birds each hectare, that's maximum one bird each 4m made even. Take a close take a look at several of the deal homes - it could well be your home has the appropriate perches, proper ventilation and adequate nest boxes for a reasonable number of birds, however will each of the chickens have anything greater than an A4 sized item of ground to spend the day on? And so as the saying goes, "you obtain what you spend for". You could assume you've got hold of a bargain, yet you and your flock could rue the day you did. Acquisition the best house and it will certainly last for a couple of years, if not longer provided the appropriate therapy. Eventually your chicken and your chicken keeping experience will certainly be considerably the far better for it.
