On Saturday, we butchered 35 meat chickens in 3 1/2  hours!! It was a lot of fun…but a little cold.    Daddy took care of the heads, wings and legs. Jessie, Lyssa and Annie skinned them and Suzanna and Cassie gutted them. At the end we all cut up the pieces and bagged them. Bekah and Charissa were our photographers!!    Here are a few pictures…

All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Pittstown, New Jersey Baby chicks are really cute and also difficult to withstand, but it's finest to prepare for their arrival prior to you obtain them. Prepare first by collecting not just the right products, but also the proper understanding to look after them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably straightforward, you just should give them with the following: A tidy and also cozy habitat A lot of food and also water Attention as well as love Environment Your habitat can be a simple box, fish tank, feline provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels as well as blankets (without loose strings!) to start, and after a few weeks use straw over newspaper. Keep in mind: Avoid making use of just newspaper or other sandal surfaces-- or your chicks legs could grow malformed. You likewise need something to provide food and water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water meal from the feed store, or a pickle container cover for food and also an animal bird water dispenser from an animal shop. Additionally, as the chicks get older you can introduce a perch right into the habitat to get them educated on setting down. Heat To keep your chicks heat you should supply them with a heat source. This could be as simple as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design lamp from an equipment store, or an infrared reptile warmth light bulb additionally work very well (my recommendation). Chicks need this warmth 24/7 until their downy fluff is changed with feathers (which can occupy to two months). The newly hatched require a temperature level between 90 and also 100 degrees, and also every week this could be minimized by roughly 5 levels approximately. The heat resource need to be on merely one side of the cage to permit chicks a variety of temperatures. The chicks are your ideal thermostat- if they are concealing in the opposite corner of your warmth lamp, you should reduce the temperature. If they are smothering each various other under the warmth (not just cuddling), you should put some heat. House cleaning Sanitation is crucial and also it maintains your chicks healthy and balanced. Be sure to change the bed linens frequently as well as consistently offer clean food and also water Food and also water. Chicks expand very fast which calls for lots of clean food and water. Supply enough in any way times and also check commonly to avoid dehydrated and hungry chicks. Chick food is various than adult chicken food, as well as it is available in both medicated as well as non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the initial two months, then switch over to a grower food (~ 17 % protein) for another 2 months, and then to a slightly reduced healthy protein feed or a level feed (if you have layers). Dirt Some chicks prefer to obtain a running start on taking dirt bathrooms, while others won't take up that activity till they are older. If you have the area in your chick room, present a tray of sand or dirt for them to shower in. Interest as well as love There are a few advantages to spending quality time with your chicks. First off, they will certainly more than likely bond with you and not escape as adults. Second, if you examine your chicks daily as well as enjoy their habits, you can capture ailment or other problems earlier. Watch out for hissing, limping, or other unhealthy signs. Make sure to additionally check out their poop, as diarrhea can lead to matted feathers and also clogged up cloaca. Last but not least, it is important to keep an eye out for social concerns, such as the littlest chick obtaining picked on. Vacant nest disorder So your chicks are now fully feathery and also its time for them to leave the safety and security of your house as well as move outside right into a coop. Look into our area on chicken coops to learn more concerning cages as well as appropriate coop environments.
