The chickens are eating out of my hand!!!!

Baby steps here.  These chickens need to learn that I am a friendly caring benefactor, and not a scary creepygrabber.  And pretty much the only way into the heart of a chicken is through their stomach.  I’ve started going out to check on them every morning and evening, and giving them treats of some sort, usually a handful of cracked corn.  Over the course of the last several days, they have realized that when I come out to see them, they will be getting treats, and they respond accordingly.  They now walk up to the door of the enclosure and talk at me in quiet little honks.  I have slowly been broadcasting the corn for them closer and closer to myself, and finally yesterday they started eating out of my hand.  I’m aware that I am reaching facebook parent level obsession, but I’m not forcing you to watch the video.  But you know, you can if you want to!

How to Care for your new baby chickens in New Egypt, New Jersey Baby chicks are quite adorable as well as hard to resist, yet it's best to plan for their arrival prior to you get them. Prepare initially by compiling not only the appropriate materials, yet also the correct knowledge to care for them. Raising baby chicks is relatively simple, you just should provide them with the following: A clean and also warm habitat A lot of food and water Interest and also love Environment Your environment can be an easy box, fish tank, feline carrier, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and blankets (without loose strings!) to begin, and also after a couple of weeks utilize straw over paper. Note: Avoid using only newspaper or other sandal surfaces-- or your chicks legs can grow misshapen. You also require something to provide food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder and water meal from the feed shop, or a pickle container lid for food and a family pet bird water dispenser from a pet dog store. Additionally, as the chicks get older you can introduce a perch into the habitat to get them trained on perching. Warmth To keep your chicks heat you should supply them with a heat source. This could be as easy as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from an equipment shop, or an infrared reptile heat light bulb likewise function very well (my recommendation). Chicks require this warmth 24/7 till their downy fluff is replaced with feathers (which could occupy to 2 months). The newly hatched require a temperature level between 90 and 100 levels, and also weekly this can be reduced by roughly 5 levels or so. The heat source need to get on merely one side of the cage to allow chicks a variety of temperatures. The chicks are your best thermostat- if they are hiding in the contrary edge of your heat lamp, you should lower the temperature. If they are smothering each various other under the heat (not simply cuddling), you need to add some warmth. Home cleaning Sanitation is essential and it keeps your chicks healthy and balanced. Be sure to change the bed linen usually as well as consistently supply clean food and also water Food and also water. Chicks expand extremely quick which calls for plenty of tidy food and water. Offer sufficient whatsoever times and also examine often to prevent parched and also hungry chicks. Chick food is various than adult chicken food, and also it can be found in both medicated and non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the initial two months, after that change to a grower food (~ 17 % protein) for another 2 months, and then to a somewhat lower protein feed or a layer feed (if you have layers). Soil Some chicks like to obtain a head start on taking filth bathrooms, while others won't take up that task till they are older. If you have the room in your chick unit, introduce a tray of sand or filth for them to bathe in. Attention as well as love There are a couple of advantages to hanging out with your chicks. To start with, they will certainly most likely bond with you as well as not flee as grownups. Second, if you examine your chicks daily as well as view their behavior, you can capture ailment or other troubles previously. Keep an eye out for wheezing, limping, or various other unhealthy signs. Be sure to also take a look at their poop, as looseness of the bowels can cause matted plumes and also obstructed cloaca. Last but not least, it is important to keep an eye out for social issues, such as the smallest chick getting teased. Vacant nest disorder So your chicks are now totally feathered and also its time for them to leave the safety of your residence and move outside right into a cage. Take a look at our area on chicken coops to get more information regarding cages as well as appropriate coop environments.
