A Return to Chickens

It’s been a while. Probably a year in fact since we last had chickens.

We’ve had them off and on since we moved to the farm but, as I’ve told you before, paid us a few visits and then when I got pregnant with Baby G, Hubster sold them because, and I quote, he didn’t want to look after my dog, sheep, rabbits AND chickens while I was in confinement. A) what century are we in. Confinement. And B) why just the chickens?

Anyway I reluctantly allowed him to sell them. However the farm just doesn’t seem like a farm without hens so I had one of my small coops mended and yesterday, the children and I went to pick two ladies from a flock at another farm up the road.

Meet Beryl and Sylvia.

Beryl is a Black Rock and Sylvia (the more silvery one of the two) is a Speckeldy.

I only have one photo so far because the seemed a bit shy so I just left the with food and water to settle in.

I am so happy we have chickens again and I am going to encourage Boo to go and collect the eggs.

If you have ever wanted to keep chickens yourself, here is my

Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Lyons Nebraska * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Lyons Nebraska is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Lyons, Nebraska Baby chicks are really cute and also hard to stand up to, yet it's ideal to plan for their arrival before you get them. Prepare initially by compiling not just the proper materials, however additionally the appropriate understanding to look after them. Raising baby chicks is fairly straightforward, you merely have to offer them with the following: A tidy and also warm and comfortable habitat Plenty of food as well as water Attention as well as love Habitat Your environment could be an easy box, fish tank, pet cat carrier, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels as well as coverings (without any loose strings!) to start, as well as after a couple of weeks use straw over paper. Note: Avoid making use of only paper or other slipper surface areas-- or your chicks legs could grow malformed. You likewise need something to dish out food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water recipe from the feed store, or a pickle container lid for food and a family pet bird water dispenser from a family pet shop. Also, as the chicks grow older you could introduce a perch into the habitat to obtain them trained on setting down. Warmth To maintain your chicks warm you should offer them with a warmth resource. This could be as straightforward as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style lamp from an equipment shop, or an infrared reptile heat bulb likewise function very well (my suggestion). Chicks need this warmth 24/7 till their downy fluff is replaced with feathers (which can use up to 2 months). The freshly hatched out require a temperature level between 90 and also 100 degrees, and also each week this can be decreased by around 5 levels or so. The heat resource ought to get on just one side of the cage to permit chicks a variety of temperature levels. The chicks are your finest thermostat- if they are hiding in the opposite corner of your warmth light, you need to minimize the temperature. If they are smothering each other under the warmth (not merely curling up), you should include some warmth. Housekeeping Tidiness is essential as well as it maintains your chicks healthy. Be sure to alter the bed linen usually and also consistently offer clean food as well as water Food and water. Chicks grow very quick which needs lots of tidy food and also water. Offer sufficient at all times and examine frequently to prevent thirsty and hungry chicks. Chick food is various compared to adult chicken food, and also it is available in both medicated as well as non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the first two months, after that switch over to a raiser food (~ 17 % protein) for an additional 2 months, and afterwards to a slightly lower protein feed or a layer feed (if you have layers). Dirt Some chicks like to get a running start on taking filth baths, while others won't occupy that activity up until they are older. If you have the space in your chick unit, introduce a tray of sand or dust for them to bathe in. Attention as well as love There are a few benefits to hanging out with your chicks. To start with, they will more than likely bond with you and also not flee as adults. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and see their habits, you can catch ailment or various other problems previously. Keep an eye out for wheezing, limping, or various other harmful indicators. Make certain to likewise take a look at their poop, as diarrhea can result in matted plumes and obstructed cloaca. Lastly, it is very important to look out for social problems, such as the littlest chick obtaining picked on. Vacant nest syndrome So your chicks are currently fully feathered and also its time for them to leave the security of your house as well as move outside into a coop. Have a look at our section on chicken cages to learn more about cages as well as correct coop habitats.
