New Baby Chicks Have Arrived

I just had to share some pictures of our newest babies.  They are black sexlinks and one golden sexlink.  They are sooo cute.  We just got them yesterday, but they are 10 days old.  Since it has done nothing but rain, 2.75 inches between yesterday and today, they are safe and dry in the garage.  When everything dries out they will go to the outdoor brooder.

I’ll post more pictures as time goes.

NETypically hatcheries online offer both standard breeds and bantams. Bantams are fun hardy little chickens, they lay tiny eggs that kids especially love collecting. Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Edgar Nebraska * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Edgar Nebraska is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Edgar, Nebraska Baby chicks are very cute and difficult to withstand, but it's ideal to plan for their arrival prior to you obtain them. Prepare initially by collecting not just the correct products, yet additionally the correct knowledge to take care of them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably easy, you merely should supply them with the following: A clean as well as warm habitat Plenty of food and water Focus as well as love Habitat Your habitat can be a basic box, fish tank, pet cat service provider, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels as well as coverings (with no loose strings!) to start, and after a few weeks use straw over paper. Keep in mind: Avoid making use of just paper or various other slipper surfaces-- or your chicks legs can expand misshapen. You likewise need something to provide food as well as water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water meal from the feed shop, or a pickle container cover for food and a pet bird water dispenser from a pet store. Likewise, as the chicks age you can present a perch right into the habitat to obtain them educated on setting down. Heat To keep your chicks heat you have to give them with a warmth resource. This can be as simple as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from a hardware shop, or an infrared reptile heat bulb also work extremely well (my suggestion). Chicks need this warmth 24/7 till their downy fluff is replaced with feathers (which could use up to two months). The recently hatched require a temperature in between 90 as well as 100 degrees, as well as weekly this could be lowered by about 5 degrees or so. The heat resource should get on just one side of the cage to permit chicks a variety of temperature levels. The chicks are your finest thermostat- if they are concealing in the other corner of your heat lamp, you should minimize the temperature. If they are smothering each various other under the heat (not merely curling up), you need to add some heat. House cleaning Tidiness is crucial as well as it maintains your chicks healthy and balanced. Be sure to transform the bed linen usually as well as always provide clean food as well as water Food and also water. Chicks expand quite fast which requires lots of clean food and also water. Offer sufficient whatsoever times as well as check frequently to stop parched and hungry chicks. Chick food is different compared to adult chicken food, and it can be found in both medicated and non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the first 2 months, then switch over to a raiser food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for one more 2 months, then to a somewhat reduced healthy protein feed or a layer feed (if you have levels). Soil Some chicks want to obtain a running start on taking dust baths, while others will not occupy that task till they are older. If you have the space in your chick room, present a tray of sand or dirt for them to bathe in. Attention and also love There are a few benefits to spending time with your chicks. Firstly, they will more than likely bond with you and not flee as grownups. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily as well as view their habits, you can catch health problem or other problems previously. Watch out for hissing, limping, or other unhealthy signs. Make certain to also look at their poop, as looseness of the bowels could result in matted feathers and clogged up cloaca. Lastly, it is necessary to watch out for social problems, such as the littlest chick obtaining badgered. Empty nest syndrome So your chicks are currently totally feathered and its time for them to leave the safety of your residence as well as relocate outside right into a cage. Have a look at our part on chicken coops to find out more about coops as well as proper cage environments.
