A Return to Chickens

It’s been a while. Probably a year in fact since we last had chickens.

We’ve had them off and on since we moved to the farm but, as I’ve told you before, paid us a few visits and then when I got pregnant with Baby G, Hubster sold them because, and I quote, he didn’t want to look after my dog, sheep, rabbits AND chickens while I was in confinement. A) what century are we in. Confinement. And B) why just the chickens?

Anyway I reluctantly allowed him to sell them. However the farm just doesn’t seem like a farm without hens so I had one of my small coops mended and yesterday, the children and I went to pick two ladies from a flock at another farm up the road.

Meet Beryl and Sylvia.

Beryl is a Black Rock and Sylvia (the more silvery one of the two) is a Speckeldy.

I only have one photo so far because the seemed a bit shy so I just left the with food and water to settle in.

I am so happy we have chickens again and I am going to encourage Boo to go and collect the eggs.

If you have ever wanted to keep chickens yourself, here is my

MTTypically hatcheries online offer both standard breeds and bantams. Bantams are fun hardy little chickens, they lay tiny eggs that kids especially love collecting. Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Powderville Montana * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. If you want a mixture of both male and female then choosing a "straight run" will save you money and you will get a mixture of male and female chicks. You can also choose all males or all females too. * Weekly specials. Hatcheries have sales on chicks, you are likely to get a good deal if you are flexible with the breeds you are wanting. Cons of buying baby chicks in Powderville Montana * Order early to get the best selection. Certain breeds sell out fast, sometimes as early as 6 months in advance of shipping! If you are wanting a certain breed it's best to order your chicks in the fall before their orders sell out.

Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Powderville Montana is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Powderville, Montana Baby chicks are very adorable and also tough to withstand, but it's best to prepare for their arrival prior to you obtain them. Prepare first by collecting not only the proper materials, however likewise the correct understanding to care for them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably basic, you merely need to give them with the following: A clean and warm and comfortable environment A lot of food as well as water Focus and also love Habitat Your environment can be an easy box, fish tank, cat provider, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels as well as blankets (without loose strings!) to start, as well as after a few weeks make use of straw over newspaper. Note: Avoid using just paper or other sandal surface areas-- or your chicks legs could grow misshapen. You also need something to serve up food as well as water in, such as a chicken feeder and water dish from the feed shop, or a pickle jar lid for food and also a pet dog bird water dispenser from a pet dog shop. Additionally, as the chicks grow older you could present a perch into the environment to obtain them trained on setting down. Heat To keep your chicks heat you have to give them with a warmth resource. This can be as basic as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design light from an equipment store, or an infrared reptile heat light bulb also work effectively (my referral). Chicks need this warmth 24/7 up until their downy fluff is replaced with plumes (which can use up to two months). The newly hatched require a temperature level in between 90 and 100 levels, and each week this can be minimized by roughly 5 levels approximately. The warmth resource ought to be on simply one side of the cage to enable chicks a range of temperatures. The chicks are your best thermometer- if they are concealing in the other corner of your heat lamp, you should minimize the temperature level. If they are smothering each other under the warmth (not simply snuggling), you have to include some warmth. Home cleaning Sanitation is key as well as it keeps your chicks healthy. Be sure to alter the bed linen often as well as always provide clean food and water Food as well as water. Chicks expand really quickly which needs lots of clean food and also water. Offer enough in any way times and also inspect frequently to avoid dehydrated as well as starving chicks. Chick food is various compared to grown-up chicken food, as well as it can be found in both medicated and also non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the very first 2 months, after that switch to a grower food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for one more 2 months, and after that to a somewhat reduced protein feed or a layer feed (if you have layers). Soil Some chicks prefer to obtain a running start on taking dust bathrooms, while others will not use up that task until they are older. If you have the area in your chick room, introduce a tray of sand or dust for them to shower in. Focus as well as love There are a few advantages to hanging out with your chicks. First off, they will certainly probably bond with you and not escape as adults. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily as well as see their behavior, you can capture illness or other problems previously. Keep an eye out for hissing, hopping, or other harmful signs. Make certain to additionally take a look at their poop, as looseness of the bowels can cause matted plumes as well as stopped up cloaca. Lastly, it is essential to look out for social issues, such as the tiniest chick obtaining badgered. Empty nest disorder So your chicks are now fully feathery and also its time for them to leave the safety of your residence as well as relocate outside right into a cage. Have a look at our section on chicken cages for more information concerning coops and correct coop environments.
