On Saturday, we butchered 35 meat chickens in 3 1/2  hours!! It was a lot of fun…but a little cold.    Daddy took care of the heads, wings and legs. Jessie, Lyssa and Annie skinned them and Suzanna and Cassie gutted them. At the end we all cut up the pieces and bagged them. Bekah and Charissa were our photographers!!    Here are a few pictures…

Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Olney, Montana Baby chicks are really charming and difficult to withstand, yet it's finest to plan for their arrival before you get them. Prepare first by collecting not only the correct products, however additionally the appropriate understanding to care for them. Raising baby chicks is fairly easy, you just should provide them with the following: A tidy and also warm habitat Plenty of food and water Attention and also love Habitat Your environment could be a basic box, fish tank, cat service provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and also coverings (without loose strings!) to start, as well as after a couple of weeks use straw over paper. Note: Avoid making use of just newspaper or other slipper surface areas-- or your chicks legs could grow malformed. You likewise require something to dish out food as well as water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water dish from the feed store, or a pickle jar cover for food and an animal bird water dispenser from a family pet store. Additionally, as the chicks grow older you could introduce a perch into the habitat to obtain them educated on perching. Warmth To maintain your chicks heat you should give them with a heat resource. This can be as straightforward as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from an equipment shop, or an infrared reptile warmth bulb additionally function effectively (my referral). Chicks require this warmth 24/7 until their downy fluff is replaced with feathers (which can take up to two months). The recently hatched need a temperature in between 90 as well as 100 degrees, and weekly this could be minimized by around 5 degrees or so. The warmth resource must be on simply one side of the cage to enable chicks a variety of temperatures. The chicks are your best thermostat- if they are concealing in the other corner of your heat light, you have to decrease the temperature. If they are smothering each various other under the warmth (not simply cuddling), you need to include some warmth. Housekeeping Sanitation is vital and it maintains your chicks healthy. Make certain to alter the bed linens frequently as well as always give clean food as well as water Food as well as water. Chicks expand really quickly which calls for a lot of tidy food and water. Offer enough in any way times and examine often to avoid dehydrated as well as hungry chicks. Chick food is different than grown-up chicken food, and it comes in both medicated and non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the very first 2 months, after that switch over to a grower food (~ 17 % protein) for one more 2 months, and then to a somewhat reduced protein feed or a layer feed (if you have layers). Dirt Some chicks prefer to get a running start on taking filth bathrooms, while others will not take up that activity till they are older. If you have the room in your chick unit, introduce a tray of sand or filth for them to shower in. Interest and love There are a few advantages to hanging out with your chicks. To start with, they will certainly more than likely bond with you as well as not escape as adults. Second, if you examine your chicks daily as well as see their behavior, you could catch disease or various other issues previously. Keep an eye out for wheezing, hopping, or other unhealthy indications. Make sure to likewise consider their poop, as diarrhea can result in matted feathers and clogged up cloaca. Lastly, it is important to watch out for social problems, such as the tiniest chick obtaining badgered. Vacant nest syndrome So your chicks are currently completely feathery and its time for them to leave the security of your house as well as relocate outside into a cage. Look into our area on chicken coops for more information regarding coops and appropriate coop habitats.
