Corgis and Chicks: Baby Belina

The second in our “Corgis and Chicks” series features my special little lap chicken, Belina II. Belina the first was my “lap hen” back in Austin, and we’ve decided to always have a Buff Orpington named Belina in our flock. Baby Belina is proving to be as sweet as her namesake, happy to cuddle or eat from our hands. I can’t wait to pat her for years to come! (She gets a pardon from any culling in the future and will live to her natural demise.)

Big ears and little – alert and listening.

Pocket is so sweet with her kisses…. though i know her real motivation is the ‘snacks’ that our chickens deposit with frequency. So gross.

Buff Orpingtons are awful sweet! at my Etsy shop – no poop included!

MTTypically hatcheries online offer both standard breeds and bantams. Bantams are fun hardy little chickens, they lay tiny eggs that kids especially love collecting. Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Biddle Montana * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Biddle Montana is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Biddle, Montana Baby chicks are extremely adorable as well as tough to resist, but it's ideal to plan for their arrival prior to you get them. Prepare initially by collecting not just the proper products, but additionally the correct understanding to care for them. Raising baby chicks is relatively straightforward, you merely should supply them with the following: A tidy and also cozy environment Plenty of food and also water Attention and also love Environment Your environment could be a simple box, aquarium, feline provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and also coverings (without any loosened strings!) to begin, as well as after a few weeks use straw over newspaper. Keep in mind: Avoid using just paper or other slipper surfaces-- or your chicks legs can grow misshapen. You also require something to provide food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water recipe from the feed shop, or a pickle container lid for food and an animal bird water dispenser from an animal shop. Also, as the chicks grow older you can introduce a perch into the habitat to get them educated on setting down. Warmth To maintain your chicks heat you need to offer them with a warmth source. This could be as straightforward as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design lamp from an equipment store, or an infrared reptile heat light bulb also work extremely well (my referral). Chicks require this heat 24/7 till their downy fluff is replaced with feathers (which can use up to two months). The newly hatched require a temperature in between 90 and also 100 degrees, as well as each week this could be lowered by around 5 degrees approximately. The heat resource should get on merely one side of the cage to enable chicks a variety of temperature levels. The chicks are your ideal thermostat- if they are hiding in the opposite edge of your heat light, you need to reduce the temperature level. If they are smothering each other under the heat (not just curling up), you need to include some warmth. House cleaning Sanitation is crucial and also it keeps your chicks healthy and balanced. Be sure to transform the bed linens often and also consistently give tidy food as well as water Food and water. Chicks grow really fast which requires plenty of tidy food and also water. Supply enough at all times as well as examine often to stop thirsty and starving chicks. Chick food is different than grown-up chicken food, as well as it comes in both medicated and non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the very first two months, then switch to a grower food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for one more 2 months, and afterwards to a slightly lower protein feed or a level feed (if you have levels). Soil Some chicks prefer to obtain a running start on taking filth baths, while others won't occupy that activity up until they are older. If you have the space in your chick room, introduce a tray of sand or dirt for them to bathe in. Attention and love There are a few benefits to spending time with your chicks. To start with, they will most likely bond with you and also not escape as adults. Second, if you examine your chicks daily as well as enjoy their actions, you can catch ailment or other troubles previously. Watch out for hissing, limping, or other harmful indicators. Make sure to likewise consider their poop, as diarrhea can result in matted plumes and blocked cloaca. Last but not least, it is very important to look out for social problems, such as the tiniest chick obtaining picked on. Empty nest disorder So your chicks are currently fully feathery and also its time for them to leave the safety of your home and relocate outside right into a coop. Look into our section on chicken cages to read more concerning cages and also proper coop environments.
