Easy! How to Insulate a Chicken Coop with Alpaca Fiber or Wool

Now that ole man winter is knocking on the door, it’s time again to add some insulation to the chicken coop.

Hey Annette, What does this have to do with art? Absolutely nothing! But it does have to do with fiber – in my case, alpaca fiber. And people are always asking me what they can do with alpaca fiber seconds or thirds (neck, leg and belly hair). This is a great use for it and believe me, your chickens will thank you!

Side note: Some people prefer to place a heat source in the coop. Where we live, the power goes out frequently in the wintertime. If that were to happen in the middle of the night, our chickens would freeze to death. This way, they get used to the cold and will be just fine

Supplies Needed:

-Wool or Alpaca Fiber (ask your local alpaca farm – they usually have a barn full) -Large Feed Bags -Darning Needle -Thick Yarn (Preferably synthetic as it lasts longer. Probably the only time you’ll hear me recommend synthetic yarn!) –

Stitching

Fill your bags evenly with fiber, appr. 2″ thick. About midway up the bag, place a row of knots all the way across about 3″ apart. Think of an old fashioned quilt … simply poke the needle through both sides of the bag (with the fiber in between), pull it back up and tie the ends together in a knot. This will keep the fiber from falling to the bottom of the bags.

All that’s left is to staple the bags to the inside of the chicken coop. They will settle and get icky and pooped on but should last all winter and help to keep your chickens warm.

The girls wanna know what I’m doing with their fiber!

Home Sweet Home!

How do you prepare your chickens for winter?

Most of the time these mass produced versions are built of quick grown lumber - come the initial drop of rainfall they swell, leaving you either barricading a doorway that won't shut, or ripping the doorway furniture off in a vain attempt to release the squawking residents. The first cozy day indicates the wood dries and also fractures, the felt roofing system bubbles and boils, and also come nightfall the hens refuse to enter. This is not due to their disappointment at the decrease of their when attractive residential property but since the hovel is currently a haven for, as well as possibly abounding, the poultry caretaker's bane, red mite. Add on the fact that it said on the blurb that it would match four huge hens when that stocking thickness was based on the Circle Line at 5pm on a Friday, and just what are you entrusted? A number of hinges as well as some kindling. A suitable coop for thee to four birds must cost you approximately ₤ 300 though this could depend on whether you choose for a free standing house or one with a run affixed. Thinking you are varying your birds in a big room and also the pop hole doorway allows enough for the type you keep, after that the major needs of real estate boil down to 3 factors which will certainly define the variety of birds your home will hold; perches, nest boxes and also ventilation. Many breeds of chicken will certainly perch when they visit roost at night, this perch must ideally be 5-8cm vast with smoothed off edges so the foot rests conveniently on it. The perch ought to be higher than the nest box entrance as chickens will also normally look for the highest point to perch. A perch less than that will certainly have the birds roosting in the nest box overnight (which is by the way when they generate one of the most poo) causing soiled eggs the list below day. They should not nevertheless be so high off the flooring of your home that leg injuries can occur when the bird gets down in the morning. Chickens need about 20cm of perch each (in small types this is clearly less), plus if greater than one perch is set up in your house they should be more than 30cm apart. They will hunker up with their neighbors but are not that crazy about roosting with a beak in the bloomers of the bird in front. Preferably your home needs to have a the very least one nest box for every single 3 birds as well as these need to be off the ground and in the darkest location of your house. Your home ought to have appropriate ventilation: without it after that condensation will certainly develop every evening, even in the coldest of weather condition. Be aware, air flow works with the concept of warm air leaving with a high gap attracting cooler air in from a reduced void - it's not a collection of openings on contrary wall surfaces of your house and also at the very same degree, this is what's known as a draft. If you have a house with a run connected then the points above are still true, however you must additionally take into consideration the run dimension. The EU optimum legal stocking thickness for a free range bird is (as well as let's encounter it, among the inspirations for keeping some chickens in your home is potentially enhanced or far better well-being) 2,500 birds each hectare, that's optimal one bird per 4m squared. Take a close check out a few of the deal homes - it could well be your house has the best perches, correct ventilation as well as adequate nest boxes for a reasonable variety of birds, however will each of the chickens have anything greater than an A4 sized piece of ground to invest the day on? And so as the claiming goes, "you get just what you spend for". You may assume you've got a bargain, yet you as well as your flock could rue the day you did. Purchase the best house and it will last for a few decades, otherwise longer given the appropriate therapy. In the long run your fowl as well as your poultry maintaining experience will be considerably the better for it.
