Picking up Chicks at the County Fair

Yep, I’m that kind of guy. I guess I just like the kind of chicks that hang out at the fair. What can I say?

HaHa… actually I hope you know I’m just playing with words there! We got a small batch of chicks (that’s baby chickens… just in case you didn’t know) from the County Fair. What happens at the fair is that they have an educational booth with eggs in a big see through incubator. These eggs hatch and the kids all go nuts. They love it. For the few days that the exhibit run they must hatch a few hundred chicks. These chicks are put in a large open display for the kids to look at.

If you find yourself at a County Fair with this type of exhibit, ask the volunteer if the chicks are for sale afterwards. At our Fair they have a list that you can put your name on. At closing time on the final day you stand in line ready to pay $0.50 per chick! Wow, that’s cheap 🙂

Enjoy here a short video showing the chicks after a few weeks.

and here is the young rooster after finding his voice!

How to Care for your new baby chickens in Wellington, Missouri Baby chicks are extremely adorable and tough to resist, however it's best to plan for their arrival prior to you obtain them. Prepare first by gathering not just the right products, however likewise the proper knowledge to look after them. Raising baby chicks is relatively basic, you merely need to provide them with the following: A tidy as well as warm habitat Lots of food as well as water Focus and also love Environment Your environment could be an easy box, aquarium, pet cat service provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels as well as coverings (with no loosened strings!) to begin, as well as after a couple of weeks use straw over newspaper. Keep in mind: Avoid utilizing only paper or other slipper surface areas-- or your chicks legs could expand misshapen. You additionally require something to serve up food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water recipe from the feed shop, or a pickle jar lid for food and an animal bird water dispenser from a pet dog store. Likewise, as the chicks get older you could present a perch right into the habitat to obtain them educated on setting down. Heat To maintain your chicks heat you need to give them with a warmth source. This can be as basic as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design light from a hardware shop, or an infrared reptile warmth bulb likewise function extremely well (my referral). Chicks need this heat 24/7 until their downy fluff is changed with plumes (which can occupy to two months). The recently hatched need a temperature in between 90 as well as 100 levels, as well as weekly this could be minimized by around 5 levels approximately. The warmth source should get on merely one side of the cage to allow chicks a variety of temperature levels. The chicks are your best thermostat- if they are concealing in the contrary edge of your warmth light, you need to lower the temperature level. If they are smothering each other under the heat (not just curling up), you have to put some heat. House cleaning Tidiness is crucial as well as it keeps your chicks healthy and balanced. Make sure to change the bedding typically and consistently offer clean food as well as water Food and also water. Chicks grow very fast which requires lots of clean food and water. Give sufficient in any way times as well as inspect often to avoid dehydrated and hungry chicks. Feed chick food for the very first two months, then switch over to a grower food (~ 17 % protein) for an additional 2 months, and after that to a somewhat reduced protein feed or a level feed (if you have levels). Soil Some chicks prefer to get a running start on taking filth bathrooms, while others will not occupy that task up until they are older. If you have the area in your chick room, present a tray of sand or dirt for them to bathe in. Attention and love There are a few benefits to hanging out with your chicks. To start with, they will most likely bond with you as well as not run away as grownups. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and also watch their behavior, you could catch health problem or other troubles previously. Watch out for hissing, hopping, or other undesirable signs.
