We’ve raised four different batches of chicks and this is the year I’ve made an official chick brooder box.  I used the and I was very pleased so I figured I would share my own results.

I’ll give you a basic idea of what I did but please go look at the tutorial because it has very good step by step directions and I want to make sure I give credit where it belongs.  : )

First I cut a rectangle in the top of my plastic tub.  (I used a pocket knife.)  Then I measured my strips of wood and cut them down to the right size.

Next I cut a piece of chicken wire I had left over from the chicken yard.  (I was out of hardware cloth or I would have used it.  My chicks stay indoors so the chicken wire is more to keep them from flying out then as protection from predators).

Then I drilled holes in the ends of my wood and the plastic tub for the bolts to go through.

I threaded the bolts with the chicken wire between the wood and the tub lid and screwed them on with a nut and washer.

Here are some close up pictures of the front and back of the brooder lid:

All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in South West City, Missouri Baby chicks are extremely adorable and hard to withstand, but it's best to prepare for their arrival before you get them. Prepare first by collecting not only the correct materials, yet additionally the correct expertise to take care of them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably straightforward, you simply have to supply them with the following: A tidy and warm environment Lots of food as well as water Interest as well as love Habitat Your habitat could be a simple box, aquarium, pet cat carrier, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and also coverings (with no loose strings!) to start, as well as after a few weeks make use of straw over newspaper. Note: Avoid using just paper or other slipper surfaces-- or your chicks legs can grow misshapen. You likewise need something to serve up food as well as water in, such as a chicken feeder and water meal from the feed shop, or a pickle jar cover for food and also a family pet bird water dispenser from a pet dog shop. Also, as the chicks age you could introduce a perch into the environment to obtain them trained on perching. Warmth To keep your chicks warm you should supply them with a warmth resource. This could be as straightforward as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from a hardware shop, or an infrared reptile warmth bulb additionally function very well (my referral). Chicks require this heat 24/7 up until their downy fluff is changed with feathers (which could use up to 2 months). The newly hatched need a temperature level between 90 and 100 levels, as well as each week this can be minimized by approximately 5 degrees or so. The warmth resource should be on simply one side of the cage to permit chicks a variety of temperatures. The chicks are your ideal thermostat- if they are hiding in the contrary edge of your warmth light, you should lower the temperature. If they are smothering each other under the heat (not just curling up), you have to include some heat. Housekeeping Tidiness is vital and it maintains your chicks healthy and balanced. Make sure to alter the bedding frequently and constantly offer tidy food and also water Food and also water. Chicks grow really quickly which requires plenty of tidy food as well as water. Give enough in any way times and examine commonly to avoid dehydrated as well as hungry chicks. Chick food is various than grown-up chicken food, and it comes in both medicated and also non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the first two months, after that switch over to a raiser food (~ 17 % protein) for another 2 months, then to a somewhat reduced protein feed or a level feed (if you have layers). Dirt Some chicks like to obtain a head start on taking dust bathrooms, while others won't use up that task till they are older. If you have the area in your chick enclosure, present a tray of sand or dust for them to wash in. Attention and also love There are a couple of benefits to spending quality time with your chicks. To start with, they will certainly most likely bond with you as well as not escape as adults. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and also view their actions, you could catch ailment or various other problems earlier. Keep an eye out for hissing, hopping, or various other unhealthy indications. Be sure to additionally look at their poop, as diarrhea could bring about matted feathers and obstructed cloaca. Lastly, it is very important to watch out for social issues, such as the littlest chick getting badgered. Empty nest syndrome So your chicks are currently fully feathery and its time for them to leave the safety of your house as well as move outside right into a coop.
