On Saturday, we butchered 35 meat chickens in 3 1/2  hours!! It was a lot of fun…but a little cold.    Daddy took care of the heads, wings and legs. Jessie, Lyssa and Annie skinned them and Suzanna and Cassie gutted them. At the end we all cut up the pieces and bagged them. Bekah and Charissa were our photographers!!    Here are a few pictures…

Pros of buying baby chicks in Pontiac Missouri * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Pontiac, Missouri Baby chicks are extremely charming as well as tough to withstand, but it's ideal to prepare for their arrival before you obtain them. Prepare first by gathering not only the appropriate materials, but likewise the appropriate understanding to care for them. Raising baby chicks is fairly easy, you merely have to give them with the following: A clean and also warm and comfortable environment Lots of food and also water Interest and love Environment Your habitat can be an easy box, aquarium, feline provider, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels as well as coverings (without any loosened strings!) to start, and after a couple of weeks use straw over paper. Note: Avoid utilizing just newspaper or various other slipper surfaces-- or your chicks legs could grow malformed. You also need something to provide food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder and water meal from the feed store, or a pickle container cover for food and a pet bird water dispenser from a family pet shop. Likewise, as the chicks grow older you can present a perch into the habitat to get them educated on setting down. Warmth To maintain your chicks warm you have to give them with a heat source. This can be as straightforward as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design lamp from an equipment shop, or an infrared reptile warmth light bulb additionally work very well (my referral). Chicks need this heat 24/7 till their downy fluff is changed with plumes (which could occupy to 2 months). The freshly hatched require a temperature between 90 and 100 levels, and weekly this could be minimized by approximately 5 degrees approximately. The warmth source should get on merely one side of the cage to enable chicks a variety of temperature levels. The chicks are your ideal thermometer- if they are concealing in the opposite corner of your warmth lamp, you should lower the temperature. If they are surrounding each other under the heat (not just snuggling), you have to add some heat. Housekeeping Tidiness is vital and it keeps your chicks healthy and balanced. Be sure to change the bed linen commonly as well as consistently provide tidy food and also water Food and also water. Chicks grow really quickly which requires lots of tidy food as well as water. Supply sufficient in any way times and check usually to stop dehydrated as well as starving chicks. Chick food is various than grown-up chicken food, and also it is available in both medicated and non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the first 2 months, then change to a raiser food (~ 17 % protein) for another 2 months, and after that to a somewhat reduced protein feed or a layer feed (if you have levels). Soil Some chicks like to get a head start on taking dirt bathrooms, while others won't take up that activity till they are older. If you have the room in your chick room, present a tray of sand or filth for them to wash in. Focus as well as love There are a few advantages to spending time with your chicks. First off, they will probably bond with you as well as not escape as grownups. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and enjoy their behavior, you can capture disease or various other issues previously. Watch out for hissing, hopping, or various other unhealthy indicators. Be sure to additionally look at their poop, as diarrhea could bring about matted plumes and also obstructed cloaca. Lastly, it is important to watch out for social concerns, such as the littlest chick obtaining picked on. Empty nest syndrome So your chicks are currently completely feathered as well as its time for them to leave the security of your house as well as relocate outside into a cage. Have a look at our part on chicken coops to learn more about cages as well as appropriate cage habitats.
