A Return to Chickens

It’s been a while. Probably a year in fact since we last had chickens.

We’ve had them off and on since we moved to the farm but, as I’ve told you before, paid us a few visits and then when I got pregnant with Baby G, Hubster sold them because, and I quote, he didn’t want to look after my dog, sheep, rabbits AND chickens while I was in confinement. A) what century are we in. Confinement. And B) why just the chickens?

Anyway I reluctantly allowed him to sell them. However the farm just doesn’t seem like a farm without hens so I had one of my small coops mended and yesterday, the children and I went to pick two ladies from a flock at another farm up the road.

Meet Beryl and Sylvia.

Beryl is a Black Rock and Sylvia (the more silvery one of the two) is a Speckeldy.

I only have one photo so far because the seemed a bit shy so I just left the with food and water to settle in.

I am so happy we have chickens again and I am going to encourage Boo to go and collect the eggs.

If you have ever wanted to keep chickens yourself, here is my

MOTypically hatcheries online offer both standard breeds and bantams. Bantams are fun hardy little chickens, they lay tiny eggs that kids especially love collecting. Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Hollister Missouri * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Hollister Missouri is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Hollister, Missouri Baby chicks are extremely adorable as well as tough to withstand, but it's ideal to plan for their arrival prior to you get them. Prepare initially by compiling not just the right products, but also the correct understanding to look after them. Raising baby chicks is relatively simple, you merely need to give them with the following: A clean and also warm habitat Plenty of food as well as water Interest and also love Habitat Your habitat can be a basic box, aquarium, pet cat provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and coverings (without any loose strings!) to begin, and after a couple of weeks make use of straw over paper. Keep in mind: Avoid utilizing only newspaper or various other sandal surfaces-- or your chicks legs can expand misshapen. You likewise require something to serve up food as well as water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water dish from the feed store, or a pickle container lid for food and also a pet dog bird water dispenser from a pet shop. Additionally, as the chicks grow older you could introduce a perch into the habitat to get them educated on perching. Warmth To maintain your chicks heat you should provide them with a warmth resource. This could be as easy as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style lamp from a hardware store, or an infrared reptile heat bulb additionally function extremely well (my suggestion). Chicks need this warmth 24/7 till their downy fluff is changed with plumes (which could occupy to two months). The recently hatched need a temperature level in between 90 as well as 100 degrees, and each week this can be reduced by about 5 degrees or so. The warmth resource need to be on just one side of the cage to permit chicks an array of temperature levels. The chicks are your ideal thermostat- if they are hiding in the contrary corner of your warmth lamp, you need to minimize the temperature. If they are smothering each various other under the heat (not simply curling up), you have to put some heat. House cleaning Tidiness is essential and also it maintains your chicks healthy. Be sure to transform the bedding typically and also consistently give clean food and water Food as well as water. Chicks expand really quick which requires lots of clean food and also water. Give enough in any way times as well as inspect typically to stop parched and also starving chicks. Chick food is various than adult chicken food, as well as it comes in both medicated as well as non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the first two months, after that switch to a raiser food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for an additional 2 months, and after that to a somewhat reduced protein feed or a level feed (if you have layers). Soil Some chicks prefer to get a head start on taking dust bathrooms, while others won't take up that task till they are older. If you have the room in your chick room, present a tray of sand or filth for them to wash in. Attention and also love There are a few benefits to spending time with your chicks. First of all, they will more than likely bond with you and also not escape as adults. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and enjoy their actions, you can catch ailment or various other troubles earlier. Watch out for hissing, limping, or other harmful signs. Be sure to also take a look at their poop, as looseness of the bowels could bring about matted feathers and also clogged cloaca. Last but not least, it is very important to keep an eye out for social concerns, such as the smallest chick obtaining badgered. Vacant nest syndrome So your chicks are now completely feathery and also its time for them to leave the safety and security of your home and relocate outside into a coop.
