Picking up Chicks at the County Fair

Yep, I’m that kind of guy. I guess I just like the kind of chicks that hang out at the fair. What can I say?

HaHa… actually I hope you know I’m just playing with words there! We got a small batch of chicks (that’s baby chickens… just in case you didn’t know) from the County Fair. What happens at the fair is that they have an educational booth with eggs in a big see through incubator. These eggs hatch and the kids all go nuts. They love it. For the few days that the exhibit run they must hatch a few hundred chicks. These chicks are put in a large open display for the kids to look at.

If you find yourself at a County Fair with this type of exhibit, ask the volunteer if the chicks are for sale afterwards. At our Fair they have a list that you can put your name on. At closing time on the final day you stand in line ready to pay $0.50 per chick! Wow, that’s cheap 🙂

Enjoy here a short video showing the chicks after a few weeks.

and here is the young rooster after finding his voice!

How to Care for your new baby chickens in Fenton, Missouri Baby chicks are really charming and difficult to resist, however it's ideal to prepare for their arrival before you obtain them. Prepare initially by gathering not just the correct products, however likewise the appropriate knowledge to care for them. Raising baby chicks is fairly simple, you simply need to supply them with the following: A clean and also warm and comfortable habitat A lot of food and water Attention as well as love Environment Your environment could be a basic box, fish tank, cat provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and also coverings (with no loose strings!) to start, and after a few weeks make use of straw over paper. Keep in mind: Avoid utilizing only paper or other sandal surface areas-- or your chicks legs can expand malformed. You additionally require something to provide food and water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water meal from the feed store, or a pickle container lid for food and a pet dog bird water dispenser from a family pet shop. Additionally, as the chicks age you could introduce a perch right into the habitat to get them educated on setting down. Heat To maintain your chicks warm you have to give them with a warmth source. This could be as simple as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design lamp from an equipment shop, or an infrared reptile warmth bulb likewise work extremely well (my referral). Chicks require this heat 24/7 till their downy fluff is replaced with feathers (which could occupy to 2 months). The freshly hatched require a temperature level between 90 and also 100 levels, as well as weekly this can be reduced by roughly 5 levels approximately. The heat source ought to be on simply one side of the cage to enable chicks an array of temperatures. The chicks are your ideal thermometer- if they are concealing in the contrary edge of your warmth light, you have to decrease the temperature level. If they are surrounding each other under the heat (not merely curling up), you have to put some heat. Housekeeping Sanitation is crucial and also it maintains your chicks healthy and balanced. Be sure to change the bedding frequently and also consistently supply tidy food as well as water Food and also water. Chicks expand quite quickly which needs plenty of tidy food and also water. Supply enough whatsoever times and inspect often to stop dehydrated and also hungry chicks. Chick food is different compared to adult chicken food, and also it can be found in both medicated and non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the very first two months, then change to a raiser food (~ 17 % protein) for one more 2 months, then to a somewhat lower healthy protein feed or a level feed (if you have levels). Soil Some chicks prefer to obtain a running start on taking dust bathrooms, while others won't use up that task until they are older. If you have the room in your chick enclosure, present a tray of sand or dust for them to shower in. Interest and also love There are a few advantages to spending quality time with your chicks. To start with, they will certainly probably bond with you and not escape as grownups. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and also watch their actions, you can capture illness or various other issues earlier. Watch out for wheezing, limping, or various other harmful indications. Be sure to additionally check out their poop, as diarrhea could bring about matted feathers as well as clogged up cloaca. Last but not least, it is important to watch out for social problems, such as the tiniest chick getting picked on. Vacant nest disorder So your chicks are now totally feathered as well as its time for them to leave the security of your home as well as relocate outside right into a coop. Look into our area on chicken coops to read more concerning cages and also appropriate coop habitats.
