We’ve raised four different batches of chicks and this is the year I’ve made an official chick brooder box.  I used the and I was very pleased so I figured I would share my own results.

I’ll give you a basic idea of what I did but please go look at the tutorial because it has very good step by step directions and I want to make sure I give credit where it belongs.  : )

First I cut a rectangle in the top of my plastic tub.  (I used a pocket knife.)  Then I measured my strips of wood and cut them down to the right size.

Next I cut a piece of chicken wire I had left over from the chicken yard.  (I was out of hardware cloth or I would have used it.  My chicks stay indoors so the chicken wire is more to keep them from flying out then as protection from predators).

Then I drilled holes in the ends of my wood and the plastic tub for the bolts to go through.

I threaded the bolts with the chicken wire between the wood and the tub lid and screwed them on with a nut and washer.

Here are some close up pictures of the front and back of the brooder lid:

MOTypically hatcheries online offer both standard breeds and bantams. Bantams are fun hardy little chickens, they lay tiny eggs that kids especially love collecting. Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Cosby Missouri * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. If you want a mixture of both male and female then choosing a "straight run" will save you money and you will get a mixture of male and female chicks. You can also choose all males or all females too. * Weekly specials. Hatcheries have sales on chicks, you are likely to get a good deal if you are flexible with the breeds you are wanting. Cons of buying baby chicks in Cosby Missouri * Order early to get the best selection. Certain breeds sell out fast, sometimes as early as 6 months in advance of shipping! If you are wanting a certain breed it's best to order your chicks in the fall before their orders sell out.

Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Cosby Missouri is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Cosby, Missouri Baby chicks are quite charming and tough to resist, but it's finest to plan for their arrival prior to you get them. Prepare first by gathering not only the proper materials, but also the proper knowledge to look after them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably basic, you merely should supply them with the following: A tidy and warm environment Lots of food as well as water Attention and also love Habitat Your environment can be a straightforward box, fish tank, pet cat service provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels as well as coverings (without any loosened strings!) to start, as well as after a couple of weeks make use of straw over newspaper. Keep in mind: Avoid using just paper or other slipper surfaces-- or your chicks legs could grow misshapen. You also need something to dish out food as well as water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water meal from the feed shop, or a pickle jar lid for food and also a pet dog bird water dispenser from a pet store. Additionally, as the chicks get older you can present a perch into the habitat to obtain them educated on setting down. Warmth To keep your chicks heat you have to provide them with a heat source. This could be as basic as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style lamp from a hardware shop, or an infrared reptile warmth light bulb additionally work very well (my referral). Chicks need this heat 24/7 up until their downy fluff is changed with feathers (which can occupy to two months). The newly hatched out require a temperature level in between 90 and also 100 levels, and also weekly this can be lowered by around 5 degrees approximately. The warmth source should be on merely one side of the cage to enable chicks an array of temperature levels. The chicks are your best thermostat- if they are hiding in the contrary corner of your heat light, you need to minimize the temperature level. If they are smothering each various other under the warmth (not just snuggling), you have to add some warmth. Home cleaning Tidiness is vital as well as it maintains your chicks healthy and balanced. Make certain to alter the bed linens usually as well as constantly offer tidy food as well as water Food as well as water. Chicks grow extremely quickly which needs lots of tidy food and water. Give sufficient at all times and also inspect usually to avoid dehydrated and hungry chicks. Chick food is various than adult chicken food, as well as it is available in both medicated and also non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the first 2 months, after that switch over to a raiser food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for another 2 months, and afterwards to a slightly reduced protein feed or a layer feed (if you have layers). Soil Some chicks like to obtain a head start on taking filth baths, while others won't take up that task up until they are older. If you have the area in your chick enclosure, present a tray of sand or dust for them to bathe in. Attention as well as love There are a couple of advantages to spending quality time with your chicks. First of all, they will probably bond with you and not escape as adults. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily as well as see their actions, you could catch disease or other issues earlier. Watch out for wheezing, limping, or other undesirable indicators. Make certain to also check out their poop, as looseness of the bowels could bring about matted feathers and clogged cloaca. Last but not least, it is essential to keep an eye out for social concerns, such as the smallest chick obtaining picked on. Vacant nest disorder So your chicks are currently completely feathery and its time for them to leave the safety of your residence and move outside right into a cage. Have a look at our part on chicken coops for more information regarding cages and appropriate coop habitats.
