keep portland weird, plus chickens

I live in Portland, Oregon, where everyone in this town plays the “I’m more sustainable than you” game.

Let me set the scene:

Person A: I brought my own reusable grocery bag to the grocery store.

Person B: Me too, I do that all the time, and if I forget, I just carry all 28 items in my hands.

Person C: I’m more sustainable than both of you because I hardly ever have to go to the grocery store, I just grow all my own stuff. Also I have chickens.

Person B: Oh, really? I’ve thought about getting my own chickens, too. They’re so cute! And you get so many eggs!

Person A (me): So, guys, I’ve done the math on chickens. And here’s the deal. Let’s say I buy the best eggs at the farmers market, and let’s say those cost $9 a dozen. They don’t, but let’s just say they do. So, let’s say I eat a dozen eggs a week, minus the two weeks I’m on vacation. That’s $450 a year. That’s the price I will happily pay to keep from having chickens peck my legs.

Persons B and C: We disagree, so we’ll keep chickens. The cost to build a henhouse gets recovered in one year and we have years and years of chickens remaining to lay eggs so we’ll just keep doing that, and the chickens add to our emotional well-being.

Person A: Hey! If you ever have too many eggs, I’ll pay $9 a dozen.

End scene.

Everyone is happy.

And Kathleen doesn’t end up with chickens.

The moral of this story is, only keep chickens if you love chickens. Otherwise, buy the dang eggs!

Update: right after I wrote this post, one of the chickens I was petsitting went missing. So, I ran around in the twilight with a flashlight, calling “brown chicken, here brown chicken, where are you brown chicken?” and when I woke up the next morning, that dang chicken was in the henhouse. So, brown chicken looked like shadow, and was just sitting there, sleeping, when I thought it was lost. It was mildly funny (only because I didn’t actually have to explain to the girls I was housesitting for that I lost a chicken!) and one of the dogs thought that the flashlight I was carrying around was an enemy that needed to be barked at and consumed.

Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Aurora Missouri * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Aurora Missouri is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Aurora, Missouri Baby chicks are quite adorable and difficult to stand up to, but it's ideal to prepare for their arrival prior to you get them. Prepare initially by collecting not just the appropriate products, but additionally the proper knowledge to look after them. Raising baby chicks is fairly simple, you merely have to offer them with the following: A clean and warm habitat A lot of food and also water Interest and also love Habitat Your environment can be a basic box, fish tank, feline service provider, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and coverings (without loosened strings!) to start, and also after a few weeks make use of straw over newspaper. Note: Avoid using just newspaper or other sandal surfaces-- or your chicks legs can grow misshapen. You also need something to serve up food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water meal from the feed store, or a pickle container lid for food as well as a family pet bird water dispenser from a family pet shop. Also, as the chicks get older you could present a perch into the habitat to obtain them trained on perching. Warmth To maintain your chicks heat you have to provide them with a heat source. This could be as basic as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design lamp from a hardware shop, or an infrared reptile warmth bulb additionally function very well (my recommendation). Chicks need this heat 24/7 until their downy fluff is changed with feathers (which can take up to 2 months). The recently hatched require a temperature between 90 and 100 levels, as well as each week this could be lowered by roughly 5 degrees approximately. The warmth source need to get on merely one side of the cage to enable chicks a range of temperatures. The chicks are your best thermostat- if they are hiding in the opposite edge of your warmth light, you need to minimize the temperature. If they are surrounding each other under the warmth (not merely snuggling), you should put some warmth. House cleaning Sanitation is essential and it keeps your chicks healthy and balanced. Make sure to transform the bedding typically and always supply clean food and water Food and also water. Chicks expand very fast which calls for a lot of tidy food and also water. Give enough whatsoever times as well as check often to stop dehydrated as well as starving chicks. Chick food is different compared to grown-up chicken food, and it is available in both medicated and also non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the first 2 months, after that switch to a grower food (~ 17 % protein) for an additional 2 months, and then to a slightly lower protein feed or a layer feed (if you have levels). Dirt Some chicks prefer to obtain a head start on taking dirt bathrooms, while others will not occupy that task until they are older. If you have the space in your chick unit, introduce a tray of sand or dirt for them to shower in. Attention as well as love There are a couple of advantages to spending quality time with your chicks. First of all, they will certainly probably bond with you and also not flee as grownups. Second, if you examine your chicks daily as well as watch their behavior, you can capture disease or various other issues previously. Keep an eye out for wheezing, hopping, or other unhealthy signs. Make certain to likewise take a look at their poop, as looseness of the bowels can bring about matted plumes and clogged up cloaca. Finally, it is essential to keep an eye out for social concerns, such as the tiniest chick obtaining teased. Empty nest disorder So your chicks are now completely feathered and also its time for them to leave the security of your residence as well as relocate outside into a coop. Take a look at our part on chicken coops for more information about cages as well as correct cage habitats.
