Picking up Chicks at the County Fair

Yep, I’m that kind of guy. I guess I just like the kind of chicks that hang out at the fair. What can I say?

HaHa… actually I hope you know I’m just playing with words there! We got a small batch of chicks (that’s baby chickens… just in case you didn’t know) from the County Fair. What happens at the fair is that they have an educational booth with eggs in a big see through incubator. These eggs hatch and the kids all go nuts. They love it. For the few days that the exhibit run they must hatch a few hundred chicks. These chicks are put in a large open display for the kids to look at.

If you find yourself at a County Fair with this type of exhibit, ask the volunteer if the chicks are for sale afterwards. At our Fair they have a list that you can put your name on. At closing time on the final day you stand in line ready to pay $0.50 per chick! Wow, that’s cheap 🙂

Enjoy here a short video showing the chicks after a few weeks.

and here is the young rooster after finding his voice!

All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Olive Branch, Mississippi Baby chicks are quite charming and also difficult to stand up to, yet it's best to plan for their arrival prior to you get them. Prepare first by compiling not only the right materials, however also the proper knowledge to care for them. Raising baby chicks is fairly simple, you merely need to give them with the following: A clean and warm environment Lots of food and also water Attention and also love Habitat Your environment can be a basic box, fish tank, feline carrier, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels as well as blankets (without loose strings!) to begin, and also after a couple of weeks use straw over newspaper. Keep in mind: Avoid making use of just paper or other slipper surfaces-- or your chicks legs can expand misshapen. You additionally require something to serve up food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water recipe from the feed store, or a pickle jar lid for food and also a family pet bird water dispenser from an animal store. Likewise, as the chicks get older you can introduce a perch into the environment to obtain them educated on setting down. Heat To keep your chicks heat you should supply them with a warmth source. This can be as easy as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design lamp from an equipment shop, or an infrared reptile heat bulb also work extremely well (my referral). Chicks need this heat 24/7 until their downy fluff is changed with plumes (which can occupy to 2 months). The freshly hatched require a temperature level between 90 and 100 levels, as well as every week this can be minimized by roughly 5 levels or so. The warmth resource ought to be on merely one side of the cage to enable chicks an array of temperatures. The chicks are your ideal thermometer- if they are concealing in the opposite edge of your warmth light, you should decrease the temperature level. If they are surrounding each other under the heat (not merely cuddling), you have to include some heat. House cleaning Tidiness is crucial and it keeps your chicks healthy. Be sure to change the bed linens often and also constantly give clean food and also water Food as well as water. Chicks grow quite fast which needs lots of tidy food and water. Offer enough in any way times and also check commonly to stop parched as well as hungry chicks. Chick food is various compared to grown-up chicken food, as well as it comes in both medicated and also non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the initial 2 months, then switch over to a grower food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for an additional 2 months, and afterwards to a slightly lower protein feed or a level feed (if you have layers). Dirt Some chicks prefer to obtain a head start on taking dirt baths, while others will not use up that task until they are older. If you have the space in your chick enclosure, present a tray of sand or filth for them to bathe in. Attention as well as love There are a few advantages to spending time with your chicks. First of all, they will most likely bond with you and not escape as adults. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily as well as watch their behavior, you could catch illness or various other issues previously. Watch out for wheezing, hopping, or other undesirable signs. Make certain to also take a look at their poop, as diarrhea can bring about matted feathers and clogged up cloaca. Finally, it is essential to watch out for social problems, such as the littlest chick obtaining picked on. Vacant nest disorder So your chicks are currently totally feathery as well as its time for them to leave the safety and security of your residence as well as move outside into a coop. Have a look at our part on chicken cages to read more regarding cages and correct cage habitats.
