A Return to Chickens

It’s been a while. Probably a year in fact since we last had chickens.

We’ve had them off and on since we moved to the farm but, as I’ve told you before, paid us a few visits and then when I got pregnant with Baby G, Hubster sold them because, and I quote, he didn’t want to look after my dog, sheep, rabbits AND chickens while I was in confinement. A) what century are we in. Confinement. And B) why just the chickens?

Anyway I reluctantly allowed him to sell them. However the farm just doesn’t seem like a farm without hens so I had one of my small coops mended and yesterday, the children and I went to pick two ladies from a flock at another farm up the road.

Meet Beryl and Sylvia.

Beryl is a Black Rock and Sylvia (the more silvery one of the two) is a Speckeldy.

I only have one photo so far because the seemed a bit shy so I just left the with food and water to settle in.

I am so happy we have chickens again and I am going to encourage Boo to go and collect the eggs.

If you have ever wanted to keep chickens yourself, here is my

How to Care for your new baby chickens in Crenshaw, Mississippi Baby chicks are quite cute and also hard to stand up to, but it's finest to prepare for their arrival prior to you get them. Prepare first by compiling not just the right products, yet likewise the appropriate understanding to look after them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably basic, you just need to provide them with the following: A clean and also warm environment A lot of food and water Interest and love Habitat Your environment could be an easy box, aquarium, feline carrier, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and blankets (without loosened strings!) to begin, and after a few weeks make use of straw over newspaper. Note: Avoid making use of just newspaper or other sandal surfaces-- or your chicks legs can grow misshapen. You additionally need something to dish out food as well as water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water dish from the feed shop, or a pickle container cover for food and a pet bird water dispenser from an animal store. Likewise, as the chicks grow older you could introduce a perch right into the environment to obtain them trained on setting down. Warmth To maintain your chicks heat you should provide them with a warmth source. This could be as straightforward as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from a hardware store, or an infrared reptile heat bulb also work very well (my referral). Chicks require this warmth 24/7 up until their downy fluff is changed with feathers (which can take up to two months). The recently hatched out require a temperature level in between 90 and also 100 levels, and weekly this could be minimized by about 5 levels approximately. The heat resource ought to get on just one side of the cage to allow chicks an array of temperature levels. The chicks are your ideal thermometer- if they are concealing in the contrary edge of your heat light, you should lower the temperature level. If they are smothering each other under the heat (not simply cuddling), you should put some heat. Housekeeping Tidiness is vital as well as it maintains your chicks healthy. Make sure to transform the bed linens often as well as always supply tidy food and water Food as well as water. Chicks expand extremely fast which requires lots of tidy food as well as water. Give sufficient at all times and also check typically to prevent thirsty as well as hungry chicks. Chick food is various compared to grown-up chicken food, and also it can be found in both medicated and also non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the very first 2 months, after that change to a grower food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for an additional 2 months, then to a slightly reduced healthy protein feed or a level feed (if you have layers). Dirt Some chicks like to obtain a running start on taking dust baths, while others will not use up that task until they are older. If you have the space in your chick unit, present a tray of sand or filth for them to bathe in. Interest and also love There are a few advantages to spending time with your chicks. First of all, they will certainly probably bond with you as well as not escape as grownups. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and watch their actions, you can catch ailment or various other problems previously. Keep an eye out for hissing, hopping, or other harmful indicators. Make sure to likewise look at their poop, as looseness of the bowels can result in matted feathers and also clogged cloaca. Finally, it is essential to watch out for social problems, such as the tiniest chick obtaining teased. Vacant nest disorder So your chicks are currently fully feathered as well as its time for them to leave the security of your home as well as move outside into a coop.
