Building a Chicken Coop

Hey everyone, it’s been awhile since I posted anything about our life with chickens. As you may know about 6 weeks ago our family decided to adopt some baby chicks so we could get fresh organic eggs. I think now that we have chickens it’s more of having them as pets. =) I never realized how sweet they could be and the different personalities they could carry.  A lot has gone on since we have gotten them, both sad and happy stories but those will come in another post. Today I’m sharing with you our day when we built our chicken coop.

I’m not very creative when it comes to pulling something out of my head as far as building and neither is my hubby. If he had a piece of paper with how to build and what you need for materials we would be happy as a clam. We knew we had to build a coop for the chickens but wasn’t sure which way to go about it. We live in the city and can only have hens so our space is limited. None of the stores around here carried any chicken coops for sale so we browsed ebay and found a cute chicken coop that we ended up purchasing.

It came in multiple pieces and with some pretty crappy instructions actually. A couple of pieces were broken or cracked which kind of sucked for the amount we paid for it. Luckily the ebay seller reimbursed us for some of the cost.

We were able to put it together easily in about 4 hours given that we had to make modifications to it and fix what arrived broken.

I think it looks really cute and the chickens enjoy it.

Thanks for stopping by and be on the look out for our next chicken post, “Building a Chicken Run.”

Poultry real estate is an instance in point. It's likewise a classic example of the good old bandwagon being jumped on as various would-be fowl housing experts peddle a range of accommodation asserting to be the excellent remedy to your chicken real estate requirements. Usually the price looks attractive, your house looks attractive, heck also the clean-cut family standing there feeding the chickens look attractive. Surely they recognize a top quality chicken house when they see one? There are numerous cheap as well as unpleasant coops swamping the marketplace. Chicken Coop Building Plans in Watson, Minnesota

Usually these standardized designs are built of rapid grown timber - come the initial decrease of rain they swell, leaving you either fortifying a doorway that won't close, or tearing the door furniture off in a vain attempt to launch the squawking residents. The initial warm day means the wood dries out as well as splits, the felt roof covering bubbles as well as boils, and come nightfall the chickens refuse to go in. This is not due to their frustration at the decline of their when attractive apartment but because the hovel is currently a sanctuary for, and also possibly abounding, the fowl caretaker's nemesis, red mite. Add on the fact that it claimed on the blurb that it would certainly match four large hens when that equipping thickness was based on the Circle Line at 5pm on a Friday, and also exactly what are you left with? A number of hinges as well as some kindling. A suitable coop for thee to 4 birds ought to cost you approximately ₤ 300 though this can depend upon whether you elect for a complimentary standing house or one with a run attached. Assuming you are varying your birds in a huge area and the pop opening doorway is big enough for the breed you maintain, after that the main needs of housing boil down to 3 factors which will define the number of birds the house will certainly hold; perches, nest boxes and also air flow. The majority of breeds of chicken will perch when they visit roost during the night, this perch ought to ideally be 5-8cm broad with smoothed off sides so the foot sits comfortably on it. The perch must be higher than the nest box entry as chickens will also naturally seek the acme to perch. A perch lower than that will certainly have the birds roosting in the nest box over night (which is by the way when they produce the most poo) leading to soiled eggs the list below day. They should not nevertheless be so high off the flooring of the house that leg injuries could possibly take place when the bird gets down in the morning. Chickens require regarding 20cm of perch each (in small types this is clearly less), plus if more than one perch is set up in your home they must be greater than 30cm apart. They will certainly hunker up with their neighbors but are not that keen on roosting with a beak in the bloomers of the bird ahead. Ideally the house should have a least one nest box for every single three birds and also these ought to be off the ground and in the darkest area of the house. Your home ought to have adequate air flow: without it then condensation will certainly develop every evening, also in the coldest of weather condition. Know, ventilation works on the principle of warm air leaving via a high space attracting cooler air in from a reduced void - it's not a set of holes on other wall surfaces of your home as well as at the same level, this is just what's called a draft. If you have a house with a run connected then the factors above are still true, however you need to also take into consideration the run dimension. The EU optimum lawful equipping thickness for a cost-free range bird is (and also allow's face it, one of the inspirations for keeping some chickens at home is possibly boosted or much better welfare) 2,500 birds each hectare, that's optimal one bird per 4m squared. Take a close consider several of the bargain homes - it could well be your house has the ideal perches, right ventilation as well as adequate nest boxes for an affordable variety of birds, yet will each of the chickens have anything more than an A4 sized piece of ground to invest the day on? And so as the claiming goes, "you get just what you pay for". You could believe you've got a bargain, but you and your flock might rue the day you did. Acquisition the ideal house and it will last for a couple of decades, otherwise longer given the proper treatment. In the end your fowl and also your chicken maintaining experience will certainly be considerably the better for it.
