Building a Chicken Coop

Well, we are finally done building our chicken coop for the most part. Britton woke up early on Saturday and put the shingles on the top and built the nesting boxes. He had the already done, but with the crazy rainy/snowy weather we had put off moving it to the backyard until today.

We used the lawnmower as a dolly to transport it from the garage to our backyard because I am a wuss and couldn’t carry it. Then we needed to paint the plywood white to help protect it from the elements including the sprinkler system. So we went for a bike ride down to Ace and picked up a little can of exterior paint. We sat down to paint and were done in about 15 minutes. When I saw the white blank canvas, I decided to make it a cuter chicken coop with a custom paint job. Voila! Not bad for a day’s work. What do you think? We can’t wait till the baby chicks are old enough to live there with the Leghorn.

Generally these mass produced designs are built of quick grown up timber - come the very first decline of rainfall they swell, leaving you either blockading a doorway that will not close, or tearing the door furniture off in a vain attempt to launch the squawking residents. The first warm day means the wood dries as well as splits, the felt roof bubbles and also boils, and come nightfall the hens choose not to go in. This is not because of their dissatisfaction at the decrease of their as soon as appealing commercial property but considering that the hovel is now a sanctuary for, as well as possibly abounding, the fowl keeper's bane, red mite. Add on the fact that it stated on the blurb that it would fit four big hens when that stocking density was based on the Circle Line at 5pm on a Friday, and also exactly what are you entrusted? A few hinges as well as some kindling. A decent coop for thee to four birds need to cost you in the region of ₤ 300 though this can depend upon whether you elect for a cost-free standing house or one with a run connected. Thinking you are varying your birds in a big room and also the pop opening doorway is big sufficient for the type you maintain, then the main needs of real estate boil down to 3 points which will specify the variety of birds your home will certainly hold; perches, nest boxes as well as air flow. Many types of chicken will perch when they go to roost during the night, this perch needs to preferably be 5-8cm large with smoothed off edges so the foot rests pleasantly on it. The perch must be higher than the nest box access as chickens will certainly likewise normally seek the highest point to perch. A perch lower than that will certainly have the birds roosting in the nest box overnight (which is incidentally when they create one of the most poo) causing dirtied eggs the following day. They should not however be so high off the floor of your home that leg injuries can happen when the bird comes down in the early morning. Chickens need concerning 20cm of perch each (in tiny breeds this is obviously less), plus if more than one perch is set up in your house they should be greater than 30cm apart. They will certainly hunker up with their neighbors yet are not that crazy about roosting with a beak in the bloomers of the bird ahead. Preferably your house should have a the very least one nest box for each 3 birds as well as these should be off the ground and in the darkest area of your home. Your home needs to have adequate ventilation: without it after that condensation will build up every evening, also in the coldest of weather. Understand, ventilation deals with the concept of cozy air leaving via a high space attracting cooler air in from a reduced void - it's not a collection of openings on contrary walls of the house and at the same degree, this is what's referred to as a draught. If you have a house with a run attached after that the factors above are still true, yet you ought to likewise consider the run size. The EU optimum legal equipping thickness for a free range bird is (and let's face it, among the motivations for maintaining some hens at home is potentially boosted or far better welfare) 2,500 birds each hectare, that's optimal one bird per 4m settled. Take a close consider some of the bargain residences - it could well be your house has the best perches, proper air flow as well as adequate nest boxes for an affordable number of birds, yet will each of the chickens have anything greater than an A4 sized piece of ground to invest the day on? Therefore as the claiming goes, "you obtain what you pay for". You could believe you've got hold of a deal, but you and also your flock could rue the day you did. Purchase the right house and also it will certainly last for a couple of decades, otherwise longer offered the proper therapy. Eventually your chicken and your chicken maintaining experience will be much the much better for it.
