Building a Chicken Coop

Well, we are finally done building our chicken coop for the most part. Britton woke up early on Saturday and put the shingles on the top and built the nesting boxes. He had the already done, but with the crazy rainy/snowy weather we had put off moving it to the backyard until today.

We used the lawnmower as a dolly to transport it from the garage to our backyard because I am a wuss and couldn’t carry it. Then we needed to paint the plywood white to help protect it from the elements including the sprinkler system. So we went for a bike ride down to Ace and picked up a little can of exterior paint. We sat down to paint and were done in about 15 minutes. When I saw the white blank canvas, I decided to make it a cuter chicken coop with a custom paint job. Voila! Not bad for a day’s work. What do you think? We can’t wait till the baby chicks are old enough to live there with the Leghorn.

More often than not these mass produced versions are built of rapid grown wood - come the first decrease of rainfall they swell, leaving you either blockading a doorway that won't shut, or ripping the doorway furnishings off in a vain attempt to launch the squawking citizens. The first warm and comfortable day indicates the wood dries out and fractures, the really felt roof bubbles as well as boils, and also come nightfall the hens choose not to enter. This is not because of their disappointment at the decline of their as soon as appealing property but due to the fact that the hovel is now a haven for, and also most likely crawling with, the chicken caretaker's bane, red mite. Add on the fact that it said on the blurb that it would suit 4 large chickens when that stocking density was based upon the Circle Line at 5pm on a Friday, and also just what are you entrusted? A few hinges and also some kindling. A suitable coop for thee to four birds ought to cost you in the region of ₤ 300 though this could rely on whether you elect for a free standing house or one with a run affixed. Assuming you are varying your birds in a big area as well as the pop hole doorway allows sufficient for the breed you maintain, after that the major requirements of real estate boil down to 3 points which will certainly define the variety of birds the house will hold; perches, nest boxes and air flow. A lot of breeds of chicken will perch when they visit roost at night, this perch should preferably be 5-8cm wide with smoothed off sides so the foot sits pleasantly on it. The perch needs to be above the nest box entrance as chickens will also normally search for the highest point to perch. A perch below that will have the birds roosting in the nest box overnight (which is by the way when they generate the most poo) causing dirtied eggs the following day. They should not however be so high off the flooring of your home that leg injuries could possibly take place when the bird gets down in the morning. Chickens require regarding 20cm of perch each (in little breeds this is certainly much less), plus if greater than one perch is installed in your house they need to be greater than 30cm apart. They will certainly hunker up with their neighbors yet are not that crazy about roosting with a beak in the bloomers of the bird ahead. Preferably the house must have a least one nest box for each 3 birds as well as these ought to be off the ground as well as in the darkest location of your home. The house must have appropriate ventilation: without it after that condensation will build up every evening, also in the coldest of weather condition. Realize, ventilation works with the concept of warm and comfortable air leaving via a high space drawing cooler air in from a reduced void - it's not a collection of openings on opposite walls of your home as well as at the very same level, this is exactly what's referred to as a draught. If you have a house with a run attached then the points above are still real, but you must additionally think about the run dimension. The EU maximum legal equipping density for a complimentary variety bird is (and also let's encounter it, among the inspirations for maintaining some hens in the house is possibly boosted or better welfare) 2,500 birds each hectare, that's optimal one bird per 4m made even. Take a close take a look at several of the deal residences - it could well be the house has the best perches, appropriate ventilation and also adequate nest boxes for an affordable variety of birds, but will each of the chickens have anything more than an A4 sized item of ground to invest the day on? Therefore as the stating goes, "you get what you spend for". You could think you've grabbed a bargain, however you and your flock could rue the day you did. Acquisition the appropriate house and it will certainly last for a few years, otherwise longer provided the proper therapy. Ultimately your chicken and also your fowl keeping experience will be considerably the better for it.
