Picking up Chicks at the County Fair

Yep, I’m that kind of guy. I guess I just like the kind of chicks that hang out at the fair. What can I say?

HaHa… actually I hope you know I’m just playing with words there! We got a small batch of chicks (that’s baby chickens… just in case you didn’t know) from the County Fair. What happens at the fair is that they have an educational booth with eggs in a big see through incubator. These eggs hatch and the kids all go nuts. They love it. For the few days that the exhibit run they must hatch a few hundred chicks. These chicks are put in a large open display for the kids to look at.

If you find yourself at a County Fair with this type of exhibit, ask the volunteer if the chicks are for sale afterwards. At our Fair they have a list that you can put your name on. At closing time on the final day you stand in line ready to pay $0.50 per chick! Wow, that’s cheap 🙂

Enjoy here a short video showing the chicks after a few weeks.

and here is the young rooster after finding his voice!

Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Montevideo Minnesota * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Montevideo Minnesota is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Montevideo, Minnesota Baby chicks are really cute and difficult to withstand, but it's ideal to plan for their arrival before you obtain them. Prepare first by compiling not only the correct materials, yet also the proper expertise to look after them. Raising baby chicks is relatively basic, you just have to give them with the following: A tidy and warm and comfortable environment Plenty of food as well as water Focus and love Environment Your environment can be an easy box, fish tank, pet cat provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels as well as blankets (without loose strings!) to begin, and also after a couple of weeks make use of straw over paper. Keep in mind: Avoid using just paper or various other sandal surfaces-- or your chicks legs can grow malformed. You also require something to dish out food as well as water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water dish from the feed shop, or a pickle jar cover for food as well as a family pet bird water dispenser from an animal store. Also, as the chicks grow older you can introduce a perch right into the habitat to get them trained on setting down. Warmth To keep your chicks heat you have to offer them with a warmth source. This could be as straightforward as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style lamp from a hardware shop, or an infrared reptile heat light bulb likewise work extremely well (my recommendation). Chicks require this warmth 24/7 until their downy fluff is replaced with plumes (which could use up to 2 months). The recently hatched out need a temperature level in between 90 and 100 degrees, and also every week this can be minimized by approximately 5 degrees approximately. The warmth resource must get on simply one side of the cage to enable chicks a range of temperature levels. The chicks are your ideal thermometer- if they are concealing in the opposite edge of your warmth lamp, you need to decrease the temperature. If they are surrounding each various other under the heat (not just cuddling), you have to add some heat. House cleaning Sanitation is key as well as it keeps your chicks healthy. Make sure to change the bed linen frequently and always give tidy food and water Food and also water. Chicks expand quite fast which requires plenty of clean food and also water. Offer enough whatsoever times and check often to prevent thirsty as well as starving chicks. Chick food is different compared to adult chicken food, and it is available in both medicated as well as non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the very first 2 months, then switch to a grower food (~ 17 % protein) for another 2 months, and after that to a somewhat lower protein feed or a layer feed (if you have layers). Dirt Some chicks like to get a running start on taking dust bathrooms, while others will not take up that activity until they are older. If you have the space in your chick enclosure, introduce a tray of sand or dirt for them to wash in. Interest as well as love There are a couple of advantages to spending time with your chicks. Firstly, they will certainly probably bond with you and also not flee as adults. Second, if you examine your chicks daily as well as enjoy their habits, you could capture disease or other troubles earlier. Watch out for hissing, limping, or other unhealthy signs. Make certain to likewise check out their poop, as looseness of the bowels can cause matted plumes as well as clogged cloaca. Lastly, it is important to watch out for social problems, such as the littlest chick obtaining teased. Vacant nest disorder So your chicks are now fully feathery as well as its time for them to leave the safety and security of your residence and relocate outside right into a coop. Have a look at our section on chicken cages to find out more about cages and also appropriate coop habitats.
