Building a Chicken Coop

Hey everyone, it’s been awhile since I posted anything about our life with chickens. As you may know about 6 weeks ago our family decided to adopt some baby chicks so we could get fresh organic eggs. I think now that we have chickens it’s more of having them as pets. =) I never realized how sweet they could be and the different personalities they could carry.  A lot has gone on since we have gotten them, both sad and happy stories but those will come in another post. Today I’m sharing with you our day when we built our chicken coop.

I’m not very creative when it comes to pulling something out of my head as far as building and neither is my hubby. If he had a piece of paper with how to build and what you need for materials we would be happy as a clam. We knew we had to build a coop for the chickens but wasn’t sure which way to go about it. We live in the city and can only have hens so our space is limited. None of the stores around here carried any chicken coops for sale so we browsed ebay and found a cute chicken coop that we ended up purchasing.

It came in multiple pieces and with some pretty crappy instructions actually. A couple of pieces were broken or cracked which kind of sucked for the amount we paid for it. Luckily the ebay seller reimbursed us for some of the cost.

We were able to put it together easily in about 4 hours given that we had to make modifications to it and fix what arrived broken.

I think it looks really cute and the chickens enjoy it.

Thanks for stopping by and be on the look out for our next chicken post, “Building a Chicken Run.”

Generally these standardized versions are created of rapid grown up hardwood - come the very first decrease of rain they swell, leaving you either blockading a doorway that won't shut, or tearing the door furniture off in a vain attempt to launch the squawking occupants. The initial warm day means the lumber dries and also splits, the really felt roofing system bubbles and also boils, as well as come nightfall the chickens refuse to go in. This is not because of their dissatisfaction at the decline of their once attractive residential property however since the hovel is currently a haven for, and also probably abounding, the chicken caretaker's bane, red mite. Add on the fact that it said on the blurb that it would suit 4 large chickens when that equipping density was based upon the Circle Line at 5pm on a Friday, and just what are you entrusted? A number of joints and also some kindling. A decent coop for thee to 4 birds ought to cost you approximately ₤ 300 though this could rely on whether you choose for a free standing house or one with a run connected. Presuming you are ranging your birds in a big space and the pop hole door allows sufficient for the breed you keep, after that the main needs of housing boil down to three points which will certainly specify the number of birds the house will hold; perches, nest boxes and also air flow. The majority of types of chicken will certainly perch when they go to roost during the night, this perch must preferably be 5-8cm vast with smoothed off sides so the foot sits comfortably on it. The perch ought to be above the nest box access as chickens will certainly likewise naturally look for the acme to perch. A perch less than that will certainly have the birds roosting in the nest box overnight (which is incidentally when they generate one of the most poo) bring about soiled eggs the list below day. They shouldn't however be so high off the flooring of the house that leg injuries can take place when the bird comes down in the morning. Chickens require regarding 20cm of perch each (in little types this is obviously much less), plus if more than one perch is mounted in your house they must be greater than 30cm apart. They will certainly hunker up with their next-door neighbors but are not that crazy about roosting with a beak in the bloomers of the bird ahead. Ideally your home should have a the very least one nest box for every single 3 birds and these need to be off the ground as well as in the darkest area of the house. Your home should have appropriate air flow: without it then condensation will build up every night, also in the chilliest of weather. Understand, ventilation works on the principle of warm air leaving through a high space drawing cooler air in from a reduced space - it's not a set of openings on contrary wall surfaces of your house as well as at the same level, this is what's called a draught. If you have a house with a run attached then the factors above are still true, but you ought to also think about the run size. The EU optimum legal stocking density for a complimentary variety bird is (as well as let's encounter it, one of the inspirations for maintaining some chickens at home is perhaps improved or much better welfare) 2,500 birds per hectare, that's maximum one bird per 4m settled. Take a close take a look at several of the bargain houses - it could well be the house has the right perches, correct air flow as well as ample nest boxes for a sensible variety of birds, however will each of the chickens have anything more than an A4 sized item of ground to spend the day on? Therefore as the saying goes, "you obtain what you spend for". You might assume you've got a bargain, however you and also your group can rue the day you did. Acquisition the right house and also it will certainly last for a few years, if not longer offered the appropriate treatment. Eventually your poultry and also your chicken keeping experience will certainly be considerably the far better for it.
