Picking up Chicks at the County Fair

Yep, I’m that kind of guy. I guess I just like the kind of chicks that hang out at the fair. What can I say?

HaHa… actually I hope you know I’m just playing with words there! We got a small batch of chicks (that’s baby chickens… just in case you didn’t know) from the County Fair. What happens at the fair is that they have an educational booth with eggs in a big see through incubator. These eggs hatch and the kids all go nuts. They love it. For the few days that the exhibit run they must hatch a few hundred chicks. These chicks are put in a large open display for the kids to look at.

If you find yourself at a County Fair with this type of exhibit, ask the volunteer if the chicks are for sale afterwards. At our Fair they have a list that you can put your name on. At closing time on the final day you stand in line ready to pay $0.50 per chick! Wow, that’s cheap 🙂

Enjoy here a short video showing the chicks after a few weeks.

and here is the young rooster after finding his voice!

Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Lansing Michigan * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Lansing, Michigan Baby chicks are extremely charming as well as tough to withstand, but it's best to plan for their arrival before you obtain them. Prepare first by compiling not just the correct products, however also the appropriate understanding to take care of them. Raising baby chicks is fairly easy, you just should supply them with the following: A tidy and warm environment A lot of food and also water Focus and also love Environment Your habitat could be a straightforward box, aquarium, pet cat service provider, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and blankets (without any loosened strings!) to start, and after a couple of weeks utilize straw over paper. Note: Avoid utilizing only newspaper or various other slipper surface areas-- or your chicks legs can grow malformed. You additionally need something to serve up food as well as water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water recipe from the feed store, or a pickle jar lid for food as well as a family pet bird water dispenser from a pet dog store. Additionally, as the chicks get older you can present a perch into the habitat to obtain them educated on perching. Heat To keep your chicks warm you should provide them with a warmth resource. This can be as straightforward as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from an equipment store, or an infrared reptile heat bulb also function effectively (my recommendation). Chicks require this warmth 24/7 until their downy fluff is changed with plumes (which can occupy to 2 months). The newly hatched out require a temperature level between 90 and 100 levels, as well as every week this could be lowered by roughly 5 levels approximately. The heat resource must get on just one side of the cage to enable chicks a range of temperature levels. The chicks are your best thermostat- if they are hiding in the other edge of your heat light, you have to lower the temperature. If they are smothering each various other under the warmth (not merely cuddling), you have to add some warmth. House cleaning Sanitation is crucial as well as it keeps your chicks healthy. Make sure to alter the bedding commonly as well as consistently provide tidy food and water Food as well as water. Chicks grow extremely quickly which needs plenty of tidy food and water. Give sufficient whatsoever times and check frequently to avoid parched as well as starving chicks. Chick food is different compared to adult chicken food, and also it can be found in both medicated and also non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the first 2 months, then switch over to a raiser food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for an additional 2 months, then to a somewhat reduced healthy protein feed or a layer feed (if you have levels). Soil Some chicks like to get a head start on taking dirt bathrooms, while others won't take up that task until they are older. If you have the space in your chick unit, introduce a tray of sand or dust for them to wash in. Interest as well as love There are a couple of advantages to hanging out with your chicks. First off, they will certainly most likely bond with you and also not run away as adults. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and also see their behavior, you could catch illness or various other issues previously. Watch out for hissing, hopping, or various other unhealthy indications. Be sure to additionally consider their poop, as looseness of the bowels could result in matted feathers as well as clogged up cloaca. Last but not least, it is essential to look out for social issues, such as the littlest chick obtaining teased. Vacant nest disorder So your chicks are now fully feathery and its time for them to leave the safety of your residence as well as relocate outside into a coop. Look into our part on chicken cages for more information regarding coops and proper coop environments.
