Hen sitting on eggs in winter

Isn’t it amazing how chickens go broody during the cold weather?  I would think they would just want to hatch out during the spring.  Well, I have a Silkie sitting right now and another trying to be broody….I say trying because I keep stealing her eggs.

Trinidad had six eggs under her to start with but now only has four.  The good news is they are my Barred Rock eggs which is what I really want to hatch.  Now that I have a beautiful rooster, I am eager to get some babies from him.  I bought a hen with him and she is a also gorgeous.

I wanted to again tell you how friendly I have found “chicken” people to be.  This lady (and her husband) whom we got the above rooster and hen from are so nice.  They GAVE us elk meat and deer meat.  Now, I did not cook the meat but my sister-in-law cooked it and feed it to my husband.  lol  He loved it.  Not me, I didn’t even try it.

Well, I will let you know if I get some baby chicks.  I may let the other hen start sitting, too.  I have heat lamps so I can keep my mommies and babies warm.  But, just a reminder, don’t let both mommas sit in the same area because they will fight over the babies and even kill the babies.  I don’t know if that is a normal thing to happen but it happened to me with two Silkie moms.  I let my broody hen sit for about a week or so before I move the mom and her eggs to a “maternity ward” away from the other hens.

MITypically hatcheries online offer both standard breeds and bantams. Bantams are fun hardy little chickens, they lay tiny eggs that kids especially love collecting. Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Hubbard Lake Michigan * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Hubbard Lake Michigan is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Hubbard Lake, Michigan Baby chicks are quite adorable and hard to withstand, but it's finest to plan for their arrival prior to you get them. Prepare initially by gathering not only the right products, but additionally the appropriate understanding to care for them. Raising baby chicks is relatively easy, you simply have to provide them with the following: A tidy and warm habitat A lot of food and also water Focus and also love Environment Your habitat could be a straightforward box, fish tank, pet cat carrier, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and also coverings (with no loose strings!) to begin, and also after a few weeks utilize straw over paper. Keep in mind: Avoid making use of only paper or various other slipper surface areas-- or your chicks legs can expand misshapen. You additionally need something to provide food and water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water dish from the feed shop, or a pickle jar lid for food as well as a pet bird water dispenser from a pet dog shop. Likewise, as the chicks get older you can introduce a perch right into the environment to get them trained on perching. Heat To maintain your chicks warm you need to give them with a warmth source. This can be as basic as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design lamp from an equipment shop, or an infrared reptile warmth bulb likewise function very well (my recommendation). Chicks require this heat 24/7 until their downy fluff is replaced with feathers (which could take up to 2 months). The recently hatched need a temperature in between 90 and 100 degrees, as well as each week this can be reduced by roughly 5 levels or so. The warmth source should get on just one side of the cage to allow chicks a variety of temperatures. The chicks are your best thermostat- if they are concealing in the opposite corner of your heat light, you need to reduce the temperature. If they are surrounding each other under the heat (not merely cuddling), you need to put some warmth. House cleaning Cleanliness is crucial as well as it maintains your chicks healthy and balanced. Be sure to transform the bed linen typically as well as constantly give tidy food and water Food and also water. Chicks expand really fast which calls for a lot of clean food as well as water. Give enough whatsoever times and check often to avoid dehydrated as well as hungry chicks. Chick food is different than grown-up chicken food, as well as it can be found in both medicated and also non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the very first 2 months, then switch to a grower food (~ 17 % protein) for one more 2 months, then to a slightly reduced protein feed or a level feed (if you have levels). Soil Some chicks prefer to obtain a head start on taking filth bathrooms, while others will not use up that task till they are older. If you have the space in your chick enclosure, present a tray of sand or dust for them to shower in. Focus and love There are a few advantages to spending quality time with your chicks. First of all, they will more than likely bond with you as well as not flee as grownups. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and also see their habits, you could capture ailment or various other issues previously. Keep an eye out for wheezing, limping, or various other harmful indicators. Make sure to likewise take a look at their poop, as looseness of the bowels can cause matted feathers as well as obstructed cloaca. Finally, it is important to look out for social problems, such as the littlest chick getting picked on. Empty nest syndrome So your chicks are now totally feathery and also its time for them to leave the safety and security of your home and move outside into a coop. Take a look at our section on chicken cages for more information about coops and proper coop habitats.
