Picking up Chicks at the County Fair

Yep, I’m that kind of guy. I guess I just like the kind of chicks that hang out at the fair. What can I say?

HaHa… actually I hope you know I’m just playing with words there! We got a small batch of chicks (that’s baby chickens… just in case you didn’t know) from the County Fair. What happens at the fair is that they have an educational booth with eggs in a big see through incubator. These eggs hatch and the kids all go nuts. They love it. For the few days that the exhibit run they must hatch a few hundred chicks. These chicks are put in a large open display for the kids to look at.

If you find yourself at a County Fair with this type of exhibit, ask the volunteer if the chicks are for sale afterwards. At our Fair they have a list that you can put your name on. At closing time on the final day you stand in line ready to pay $0.50 per chick! Wow, that’s cheap 🙂

Enjoy here a short video showing the chicks after a few weeks.

and here is the young rooster after finding his voice!

Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Charlotte Michigan * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Charlotte Michigan is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Charlotte, Michigan Baby chicks are very cute and also difficult to withstand, but it's ideal to plan for their arrival before you obtain them. Prepare initially by compiling not only the right materials, yet likewise the correct knowledge to look after them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably straightforward, you simply need to give them with the following: A tidy and warm environment Lots of food and also water Attention as well as love Habitat Your environment can be a basic box, aquarium, cat carrier, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and also coverings (with no loosened strings!) to begin, and after a few weeks use straw over newspaper. Note: Avoid using just newspaper or other sandal surfaces-- or your chicks legs can grow malformed. You likewise need something to provide food as well as water in, such as a chicken feeder and water meal from the feed store, or a pickle jar cover for food and a pet dog bird water dispenser from an animal shop. Also, as the chicks grow older you could introduce a perch into the environment to obtain them trained on perching. Warmth To maintain your chicks warm you need to supply them with a heat resource. This could be as easy as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style lamp from a hardware store, or an infrared reptile heat light bulb likewise work very well (my recommendation). Chicks need this heat 24/7 until their downy fluff is changed with plumes (which can use up to two months). The freshly hatched out require a temperature in between 90 as well as 100 degrees, and also weekly this can be minimized by around 5 levels approximately. The warmth source must be on just one side of the cage to permit chicks a variety of temperature levels. The chicks are your finest thermometer- if they are concealing in the opposite edge of your heat lamp, you need to minimize the temperature level. If they are surrounding each other under the heat (not merely snuggling), you have to add some heat. Home cleaning Cleanliness is crucial and also it maintains your chicks healthy. Make certain to change the bed linen typically and always provide clean food and water Food and also water. Chicks expand very quick which calls for plenty of clean food and water. Supply enough at all times as well as check usually to prevent thirsty and also hungry chicks. Chick food is various than adult chicken food, and also it can be found in both medicated and also non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the initial 2 months, then switch to a grower food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for an additional 2 months, and afterwards to a slightly reduced healthy protein feed or a level feed (if you have levels). Soil Some chicks prefer to obtain a head start on taking dirt baths, while others won't use up that activity up until they are older. If you have the room in your chick enclosure, present a tray of sand or dust for them to shower in. Interest and also love There are a few benefits to hanging out with your chicks. Firstly, they will certainly more than likely bond with you and also not run away as adults. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and also see their behavior, you could capture ailment or various other problems earlier. Watch out for hissing, hopping, or other undesirable indications. Be sure to likewise take a look at their poop, as diarrhea could cause matted plumes and clogged cloaca. Lastly, it is very important to keep an eye out for social problems, such as the tiniest chick obtaining badgered. Vacant nest syndrome So your chicks are now completely feathered and its time for them to leave the safety and security of your home and relocate outside into a coop. Have a look at our area on chicken cages to read more concerning cages and also correct cage environments.
