New Baby Chicks Have Arrived

I just had to share some pictures of our newest babies.  They are black sexlinks and one golden sexlink.  They are sooo cute.  We just got them yesterday, but they are 10 days old.  Since it has done nothing but rain, 2.75 inches between yesterday and today, they are safe and dry in the garage.  When everything dries out they will go to the outdoor brooder.

I’ll post more pictures as time goes.

MITypically hatcheries online offer both standard breeds and bantams. Bantams are fun hardy little chickens, they lay tiny eggs that kids especially love collecting. Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Caspian Michigan * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Caspian, Michigan Baby chicks are extremely cute and challenging to withstand, yet it's finest to prepare for their arrival before you get them. Prepare first by compiling not just the appropriate materials, but also the appropriate expertise to look after them. Raising baby chicks is relatively easy, you merely should offer them with the following: A clean and also warm and comfortable environment A lot of food as well as water Interest and love Environment Your environment can be a basic box, fish tank, cat service provider, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels as well as blankets (without loose strings!) to begin, and after a couple of weeks utilize straw over paper. Keep in mind: Avoid utilizing only paper or various other sandal surfaces-- or your chicks legs could expand misshapen. You likewise need something to serve up food as well as water in, such as a chicken feeder and water dish from the feed store, or a pickle jar cover for food and also an animal bird water dispenser from a pet dog store. Additionally, as the chicks age you can present a perch right into the habitat to get them educated on setting down. Warmth To maintain your chicks heat you should provide them with a warmth source. This could be as basic as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from a hardware store, or an infrared reptile heat bulb likewise function effectively (my recommendation). Chicks require this warmth 24/7 till their downy fluff is changed with feathers (which could use up to two months). The newly hatched need a temperature between 90 and also 100 degrees, and also weekly this could be reduced by roughly 5 degrees approximately. The warmth source need to be on just one side of the cage to allow chicks an array of temperature levels. The chicks are your ideal thermometer- if they are hiding in the contrary edge of your heat light, you have to reduce the temperature. If they are surrounding each various other under the warmth (not just curling up), you need to put some warmth. Housekeeping Sanitation is essential and it maintains your chicks healthy and balanced. Make sure to transform the bedding frequently as well as constantly offer clean food and also water Food as well as water. Chicks expand very fast which calls for lots of clean food and also water. Supply enough whatsoever times and also examine typically to prevent parched and also starving chicks. Chick food is different compared to adult chicken food, as well as it comes in both medicated and also non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the initial 2 months, after that switch to a grower food (~ 17 % protein) for one more 2 months, and then to a slightly reduced protein feed or a level feed (if you have levels). Dirt Some chicks prefer to obtain a head start on taking dirt bathrooms, while others won't take up that task until they are older. If you have the area in your chick enclosure, introduce a tray of sand or dust for them to wash in. Interest and love There are a couple of benefits to spending quality time with your chicks. To start with, they will more than likely bond with you and not escape as adults. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and also enjoy their habits, you could catch disease or various other issues previously. Keep an eye out for hissing, hopping, or other unhealthy indicators. Make certain to additionally consider their poop, as diarrhea can cause matted feathers as well as blocked cloaca. Last but not least, it is important to watch out for social issues, such as the tiniest chick getting badgered. Vacant nest disorder So your chicks are now fully feathery and its time for them to leave the safety and security of your residence and relocate outside into a coop. Take a look at our section on chicken coops to read more regarding cages as well as appropriate coop environments.
