A Return to Chickens

It’s been a while. Probably a year in fact since we last had chickens.

We’ve had them off and on since we moved to the farm but, as I’ve told you before, paid us a few visits and then when I got pregnant with Baby G, Hubster sold them because, and I quote, he didn’t want to look after my dog, sheep, rabbits AND chickens while I was in confinement. A) what century are we in. Confinement. And B) why just the chickens?

Anyway I reluctantly allowed him to sell them. However the farm just doesn’t seem like a farm without hens so I had one of my small coops mended and yesterday, the children and I went to pick two ladies from a flock at another farm up the road.

Meet Beryl and Sylvia.

Beryl is a Black Rock and Sylvia (the more silvery one of the two) is a Speckeldy.

I only have one photo so far because the seemed a bit shy so I just left the with food and water to settle in.

I am so happy we have chickens again and I am going to encourage Boo to go and collect the eggs.

If you have ever wanted to keep chickens yourself, here is my

How to Care for your new baby chickens in Waverley, Massachusetts Baby chicks are really cute as well as difficult to withstand, yet it's ideal to prepare for their arrival prior to you obtain them. Prepare first by compiling not only the appropriate materials, however likewise the correct expertise to take care of them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably basic, you merely should supply them with the following: A clean and also warm environment A lot of food as well as water Interest and love Environment Your habitat could be a straightforward box, aquarium, feline carrier, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and also coverings (without loose strings!) to begin, and also after a few weeks use straw over paper. Note: Avoid making use of just newspaper or various other sandal surfaces-- or your chicks legs could grow misshapen. You additionally require something to dish out food and water in, such as a chicken feeder and water recipe from the feed store, or a pickle container cover for food and also a pet bird water dispenser from an animal shop. Also, as the chicks grow older you can present a perch into the environment to obtain them educated on perching. Heat To keep your chicks warm you have to give them with a warmth source. This can be as simple as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design lamp from a hardware shop, or an infrared reptile heat light bulb likewise function extremely well (my recommendation). Chicks need this warmth 24/7 till their downy fluff is replaced with feathers (which can occupy to two months). The recently hatched out require a temperature in between 90 and also 100 levels, and also each week this could be minimized by roughly 5 degrees or so. The heat resource should be on merely one side of the cage to enable chicks an array of temperatures. The chicks are your finest thermometer- if they are concealing in the contrary corner of your heat lamp, you should reduce the temperature. If they are surrounding each other under the warmth (not simply snuggling), you have to put some heat. House cleaning Cleanliness is crucial and also it keeps your chicks healthy and balanced. Make sure to alter the bedding often and constantly offer tidy food and water Food and water. Chicks grow quite fast which requires a lot of tidy food as well as water. Supply enough in any way times as well as examine typically to stop dehydrated as well as starving chicks. Chick food is various than grown-up chicken food, as well as it is available in both medicated and non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the very first two months, then switch to a grower food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for another 2 months, and after that to a slightly lower protein feed or a layer feed (if you have levels). Dirt Some chicks like to obtain a running start on taking dirt baths, while others will not use up that task till they are older. If you have the area in your chick unit, present a tray of sand or filth for them to wash in. Interest and love There are a couple of advantages to hanging out with your chicks. First off, they will more than likely bond with you as well as not run away as adults. Second, if you examine your chicks daily as well as view their actions, you can catch illness or various other problems previously. Keep an eye out for hissing, hopping, or other undesirable indicators. Be sure to also look at their poop, as looseness of the bowels can result in matted plumes and also stopped up cloaca. Last but not least, it is very important to keep an eye out for social problems, such as the littlest chick getting teased. Vacant nest syndrome So your chicks are currently fully feathered and its time for them to leave the security of your home as well as relocate outside right into a coop. Have a look at our section on chicken coops for more information about coops and correct coop habitats.
