On Saturday, we butchered 35 meat chickens in 3 1/2  hours!! It was a lot of fun…but a little cold.    Daddy took care of the heads, wings and legs. Jessie, Lyssa and Annie skinned them and Suzanna and Cassie gutted them. At the end we all cut up the pieces and bagged them. Bekah and Charissa were our photographers!!    Here are a few pictures…

Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Three Rivers Massachusetts * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Three Rivers Massachusetts is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Three Rivers, Massachusetts Baby chicks are really charming as well as difficult to resist, yet it's ideal to prepare for their arrival prior to you get them. Prepare initially by gathering not just the appropriate products, yet also the proper expertise to take care of them. Raising baby chicks is relatively easy, you merely have to give them with the following: A tidy and also warm habitat Plenty of food as well as water Attention as well as love Environment Your habitat could be an easy box, aquarium, feline carrier, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and also coverings (without any loose strings!) to start, and after a couple of weeks utilize straw over newspaper. Keep in mind: Avoid using only paper or various other slipper surface areas-- or your chicks legs could expand misshapen. You likewise need something to serve up food as well as water in, such as a chicken feeder and water meal from the feed shop, or a pickle jar lid for food as well as a family pet bird water dispenser from a pet shop. Likewise, as the chicks grow older you could present a perch into the habitat to get them educated on setting down. Heat To maintain your chicks warm you need to supply them with a heat source. This can be as simple as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style lamp from an equipment shop, or an infrared reptile warmth light bulb additionally work effectively (my recommendation). Chicks need this heat 24/7 till their downy fluff is replaced with plumes (which could take up to 2 months). The freshly hatched require a temperature between 90 and 100 degrees, and also weekly this could be minimized by about 5 levels approximately. The heat source ought to be on just one side of the cage to permit chicks a range of temperatures. The chicks are your finest thermostat- if they are concealing in the other edge of your warmth light, you have to decrease the temperature level. If they are surrounding each various other under the heat (not merely curling up), you should include some heat. Home cleaning Sanitation is key and also it maintains your chicks healthy. Make sure to transform the bed linen frequently as well as always offer tidy food and water Food and also water. Chicks expand very quick which calls for a lot of tidy food and also water. Provide sufficient at all times as well as inspect typically to stop dehydrated and starving chicks. Chick food is different compared to grown-up chicken food, as well as it is available in both medicated and non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the initial two months, then switch over to a grower food (~ 17 % protein) for another 2 months, and afterwards to a somewhat reduced healthy protein feed or a layer feed (if you have layers). Soil Some chicks prefer to obtain a head start on taking filth bathrooms, while others will not use up that activity up until they are older. If you have the space in your chick room, introduce a tray of sand or dirt for them to shower in. Focus as well as love There are a few benefits to spending time with your chicks. First off, they will more than likely bond with you and also not escape as adults. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and also view their behavior, you could capture ailment or various other issues previously. Keep an eye out for wheezing, limping, or various other harmful indicators. Be sure to also check out their poop, as diarrhea can lead to matted feathers as well as blocked cloaca. Finally, it is important to watch out for social issues, such as the littlest chick obtaining picked on. Vacant nest syndrome So your chicks are now completely feathery and also its time for them to leave the safety of your home and move outside into a cage. Have a look at our section on chicken cages to get more information concerning cages as well as proper cage habitats.
