Picking up Chicks at the County Fair

Yep, I’m that kind of guy. I guess I just like the kind of chicks that hang out at the fair. What can I say?

HaHa… actually I hope you know I’m just playing with words there! We got a small batch of chicks (that’s baby chickens… just in case you didn’t know) from the County Fair. What happens at the fair is that they have an educational booth with eggs in a big see through incubator. These eggs hatch and the kids all go nuts. They love it. For the few days that the exhibit run they must hatch a few hundred chicks. These chicks are put in a large open display for the kids to look at.

If you find yourself at a County Fair with this type of exhibit, ask the volunteer if the chicks are for sale afterwards. At our Fair they have a list that you can put your name on. At closing time on the final day you stand in line ready to pay $0.50 per chick! Wow, that’s cheap 🙂

Enjoy here a short video showing the chicks after a few weeks.

and here is the young rooster after finding his voice!

Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Paxton Massachusetts * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Paxton Massachusetts is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Paxton, Massachusetts Baby chicks are quite cute as well as tough to withstand, however it's finest to prepare for their arrival prior to you get them. Prepare initially by compiling not just the right products, but likewise the appropriate knowledge to take care of them. Raising baby chicks is fairly simple, you merely need to give them with the following: A tidy as well as warm environment A lot of food and also water Focus as well as love Habitat Your habitat can be a basic box, aquarium, cat carrier, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and also coverings (without any loosened strings!) to begin, and also after a few weeks use straw over newspaper. Keep in mind: Avoid making use of just paper or various other sandal surface areas-- or your chicks legs can expand malformed. You likewise need something to dish out food and water in, such as a chicken feeder and water meal from the feed store, or a pickle jar lid for food and also a pet dog bird water dispenser from an animal shop. Also, as the chicks get older you could present a perch into the environment to obtain them trained on perching. Heat To keep your chicks heat you have to provide them with a warmth resource. This could be as basic as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from a hardware shop, or an infrared reptile heat bulb likewise work extremely well (my suggestion). Chicks need this heat 24/7 till their downy fluff is replaced with feathers (which could occupy to two months). The recently hatched out require a temperature level in between 90 and 100 levels, and weekly this can be lowered by approximately 5 levels approximately. The warmth resource need to get on merely one side of the cage to enable chicks a variety of temperature levels. The chicks are your ideal thermometer- if they are concealing in the contrary edge of your heat lamp, you have to lower the temperature. If they are surrounding each other under the warmth (not merely cuddling), you have to include some warmth. House cleaning Cleanliness is vital as well as it keeps your chicks healthy. Be sure to alter the bed linens commonly and also constantly give tidy food and also water Food and also water. Chicks expand quite fast which requires a lot of tidy food as well as water. Offer enough at all times as well as inspect often to stop thirsty and hungry chicks. Chick food is various than adult chicken food, as well as it can be found in both medicated and also non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the initial two months, after that switch to a raiser food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for another 2 months, and after that to a somewhat reduced healthy protein feed or a level feed (if you have layers). Soil Some chicks prefer to obtain a running start on taking filth baths, while others won't take up that task till they are older. If you have the room in your chick room, present a tray of sand or dirt for them to shower in. Focus and also love There are a few advantages to spending quality time with your chicks. Firstly, they will certainly most likely bond with you and not escape as adults. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and also view their behavior, you could catch health problem or various other issues previously. Keep an eye out for hissing, limping, or other unhealthy indicators. Make sure to likewise check out their poop, as looseness of the bowels can bring about matted feathers and blocked cloaca. Finally, it is important to watch out for social issues, such as the littlest chick obtaining teased. Vacant nest disorder So your chicks are currently totally feathery as well as its time for them to leave the security of your house and also relocate outside into a cage. Take a look at our section on chicken coops to read more about coops and proper cage environments.
