Picking up Chicks at the County Fair

Yep, I’m that kind of guy. I guess I just like the kind of chicks that hang out at the fair. What can I say?

HaHa… actually I hope you know I’m just playing with words there! We got a small batch of chicks (that’s baby chickens… just in case you didn’t know) from the County Fair. What happens at the fair is that they have an educational booth with eggs in a big see through incubator. These eggs hatch and the kids all go nuts. They love it. For the few days that the exhibit run they must hatch a few hundred chicks. These chicks are put in a large open display for the kids to look at.

If you find yourself at a County Fair with this type of exhibit, ask the volunteer if the chicks are for sale afterwards. At our Fair they have a list that you can put your name on. At closing time on the final day you stand in line ready to pay $0.50 per chick! Wow, that’s cheap 🙂

Enjoy here a short video showing the chicks after a few weeks.

and here is the young rooster after finding his voice!

How to Care for your new baby chickens in Wye Mills, Maryland Baby chicks are very cute and also difficult to stand up to, however it's finest to plan for their arrival before you obtain them. Prepare first by collecting not just the correct materials, but also the correct knowledge to take care of them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably basic, you merely should provide them with the following: A tidy and cozy environment A lot of food and also water Focus and love Habitat Your habitat can be a basic box, aquarium, cat service provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels as well as coverings (without any loosened strings!) to begin, and also after a few weeks use straw over newspaper. Note: Avoid using just newspaper or other sandal surfaces-- or your chicks legs can expand misshapen. You also need something to serve up food and water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water dish from the feed store, or a pickle jar cover for food and also a pet dog bird water dispenser from a pet store. Likewise, as the chicks grow older you can present a perch right into the habitat to get them trained on perching. Heat To keep your chicks heat you have to provide them with a warmth resource. This can be as basic as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design light from a hardware shop, or an infrared reptile heat light bulb also work extremely well (my referral). Chicks need this warmth 24/7 up until their downy fluff is replaced with plumes (which can use up to two months). The freshly hatched out require a temperature in between 90 and also 100 degrees, and weekly this could be reduced by around 5 levels or so. The heat source need to be on simply one side of the cage to enable chicks an array of temperature levels. The chicks are your finest thermostat- if they are concealing in the opposite corner of your warmth lamp, you should decrease the temperature. If they are smothering each other under the heat (not simply curling up), you should add some warmth. Housekeeping Tidiness is key as well as it maintains your chicks healthy and balanced. Make sure to alter the bed linens typically as well as constantly provide clean food and water Food and water. Chicks grow quite quickly which needs a lot of clean food as well as water. Supply enough at all times and also examine commonly to avoid dehydrated and also hungry chicks. Chick food is different compared to grown-up chicken food, as well as it comes in both medicated and also non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the first 2 months, after that change to a raiser food (~ 17 % protein) for another 2 months, and then to a somewhat reduced protein feed or a level feed (if you have layers). Soil Some chicks want to get a running start on taking dirt bathrooms, while others will not take up that task up until they are older. If you have the room in your chick room, introduce a tray of sand or dirt for them to wash in. Interest as well as love There are a few benefits to spending time with your chicks. Firstly, they will certainly most likely bond with you and also not run away as adults. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and also view their actions, you can catch ailment or other issues earlier. Keep an eye out for wheezing, limping, or other undesirable indications. Be sure to additionally look at their poop, as looseness of the bowels could bring about matted feathers and also blocked cloaca. Finally, it is very important to look out for social problems, such as the smallest chick obtaining picked on. Vacant nest disorder So your chicks are now completely feathery and its time for them to leave the safety and security of your house and move outside right into a cage. Take a look at our part on chicken cages to find out more regarding coops and also proper coop habitats.
