Building a Chicken Coop

Hey everyone, it’s been awhile since I posted anything about our life with chickens. As you may know about 6 weeks ago our family decided to adopt some baby chicks so we could get fresh organic eggs. I think now that we have chickens it’s more of having them as pets. =) I never realized how sweet they could be and the different personalities they could carry.  A lot has gone on since we have gotten them, both sad and happy stories but those will come in another post. Today I’m sharing with you our day when we built our chicken coop.

I’m not very creative when it comes to pulling something out of my head as far as building and neither is my hubby. If he had a piece of paper with how to build and what you need for materials we would be happy as a clam. We knew we had to build a coop for the chickens but wasn’t sure which way to go about it. We live in the city and can only have hens so our space is limited. None of the stores around here carried any chicken coops for sale so we browsed ebay and found a cute chicken coop that we ended up purchasing.

It came in multiple pieces and with some pretty crappy instructions actually. A couple of pieces were broken or cracked which kind of sucked for the amount we paid for it. Luckily the ebay seller reimbursed us for some of the cost.

We were able to put it together easily in about 4 hours given that we had to make modifications to it and fix what arrived broken.

I think it looks really cute and the chickens enjoy it.

Thanks for stopping by and be on the look out for our next chicken post, “Building a Chicken Run.”

Usually these mass produced versions are constructed of quick grown up hardwood - come the first drop of rain they swell, leaving you either fortifying a doorway that won't shut, or ripping the door furnishings off in a vain effort to release the squawking inhabitants. The very first warm day indicates the wood dries and also fractures, the felt roofing bubbles as well as boils, and come nightfall the chickens choose not to enter. This is not because of their disappointment at the decline of their once attractive commercial property yet because the hovel is now a sanctuary for, and also most likely crawling with, the poultry caretaker's bane, red mite. Add the fact that it claimed on the blurb that it would certainly suit four large hens when that equipping thickness was based upon the Circle Line at 5pm on a Friday, and also exactly what are you entrusted? A couple of hinges and some kindling. A decent coop for thee to four birds need to cost you approximately ₤ 300 though this can depend upon whether you elect for a complimentary standing house or one with a run affixed. Assuming you are varying your birds in a big space and also the pop hole doorway is big enough for the type you maintain, then the main demands of housing come down to 3 factors which will specify the number of birds the house will certainly hold; perches, nest boxes and air flow. A lot of types of chicken will certainly perch when they go to roost during the night, this perch should ideally be 5-8cm broad with smoothed off edges so the foot rests easily on it. The perch needs to be higher than the nest box entrance as chickens will also naturally search for the highest point to perch. A perch below that will certainly have the birds roosting in the nest box over night (which is incidentally when they create one of the most poo) resulting in stained eggs the following day. They should not however be so high off the flooring of your house that leg injuries can occur when the bird comes down in the morning. Chickens require regarding 20cm of perch each (in tiny breeds this is obviously much less), plus if greater than one perch is installed in the house they should be greater than 30cm apart. They will hunker up with their next-door neighbors yet are not that keen on roosting with a beak in the bloomers of the bird in front. Ideally your house ought to have a the very least one nest box for each three birds and these need to be off the ground as well as in the darkest area of your home. Your home must have ample ventilation: without it after that condensation will certainly develop every evening, also in the coldest of weather. Realize, air flow works with the principle of warm and comfortable air leaving with a high gap drawing cooler air in from a lower gap - it's not a collection of openings on other wall surfaces of your home and also at the very same level, this is just what's called a draught. If you have a house with a run affixed then the points above are still true, but you ought to additionally take into consideration the run size. The EU maximum legal stocking thickness for a cost-free array bird is (as well as let's face it, among the inspirations for maintaining some chickens in the house is perhaps improved or far better welfare) 2,500 birds each hectare, that's maximum one bird per 4m squared. Take a close check out some of the bargain houses - it could well be your home has the right perches, proper ventilation as well as enough nest boxes for a practical number of birds, however will each of the chickens have anything more than an A4 sized piece of ground to invest the day on? Therefore as the saying goes, "you get exactly what you spend for". You could assume you've got hold of a deal, but you and also your group might rue the day you did. Purchase the appropriate house and it will certainly last for a couple of years, otherwise longer given the correct therapy. In the end your fowl as well as your chicken keeping encounter will be a lot the far better for it.
