On Saturday, we butchered 35 meat chickens in 3 1/2  hours!! It was a lot of fun…but a little cold.    Daddy took care of the heads, wings and legs. Jessie, Lyssa and Annie skinned them and Suzanna and Cassie gutted them. At the end we all cut up the pieces and bagged them. Bekah and Charissa were our photographers!!    Here are a few pictures…

METypically hatcheries online offer both standard breeds and bantams. Bantams are fun hardy little chickens, they lay tiny eggs that kids especially love collecting. Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Thomaston Maine * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. If you want a mixture of both male and female then choosing a "straight run" will save you money and you will get a mixture of male and female chicks. You can also choose all males or all females too. * Weekly specials. Hatcheries have sales on chicks, you are likely to get a good deal if you are flexible with the breeds you are wanting. Cons of buying baby chicks in Thomaston Maine * Order early to get the best selection. Certain breeds sell out fast, sometimes as early as 6 months in advance of shipping! If you are wanting a certain breed it's best to order your chicks in the fall before their orders sell out.

Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Thomaston Maine is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Thomaston, Maine Baby chicks are very charming as well as challenging to resist, however it's best to prepare for their arrival prior to you get them. Prepare first by collecting not only the proper materials, but additionally the correct knowledge to look after them. Raising baby chicks is relatively basic, you merely have to supply them with the following: A tidy as well as cozy environment Plenty of food and water Focus as well as love Habitat Your habitat can be a basic box, aquarium, feline service provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and also blankets (without loose strings!) to start, as well as after a couple of weeks use straw over newspaper. Note: Avoid using only paper or other sandal surface areas-- or your chicks legs could grow malformed. You additionally need something to provide food and water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water dish from the feed shop, or a pickle container cover for food and also a pet bird water dispenser from a pet shop. Additionally, as the chicks grow older you can introduce a perch right into the habitat to obtain them trained on setting down. Warmth To keep your chicks warm you need to give them with a warmth resource. This could be as simple as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from an equipment shop, or an infrared reptile heat light bulb likewise function extremely well (my referral). Chicks need this warmth 24/7 up until their downy fluff is changed with feathers (which could take up to two months). The freshly hatched require a temperature level in between 90 and 100 levels, as well as weekly this could be minimized by around 5 degrees approximately. The heat resource must be on merely one side of the cage to permit chicks a range of temperatures. The chicks are your finest thermometer- if they are hiding in the other corner of your heat lamp, you have to reduce the temperature level. If they are surrounding each various other under the heat (not just curling up), you have to include some warmth. House cleaning Tidiness is key and it maintains your chicks healthy and balanced. Make sure to change the bed linens usually and consistently offer clean food and water Food as well as water. Chicks grow quite fast which needs plenty of tidy food and water. Provide sufficient at all times as well as inspect commonly to prevent dehydrated as well as starving chicks. Chick food is different compared to grown-up chicken food, and it comes in both medicated and also non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the initial 2 months, then switch to a grower food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for one more 2 months, and afterwards to a somewhat lower healthy protein feed or a level feed (if you have layers). Dirt Some chicks prefer to obtain a head start on taking dust baths, while others won't occupy that activity until they are older. If you have the space in your chick room, introduce a tray of sand or filth for them to bathe in. Interest and also love There are a few advantages to spending time with your chicks. Firstly, they will certainly most likely bond with you and also not flee as adults. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily as well as view their habits, you could catch health problem or other problems previously. Keep an eye out for wheezing, limping, or other unhealthy signs. Be sure to additionally take a look at their poop, as looseness of the bowels could cause matted feathers as well as clogged up cloaca. Lastly, it is very important to look out for social issues, such as the littlest chick obtaining teased. Empty nest disorder So your chicks are now completely feathery and also its time for them to leave the safety and security of your home and also relocate outside right into a coop. Take a look at our part on chicken cages to get more information about cages and also correct coop environments.
