We’ve raised four different batches of chicks and this is the year I’ve made an official chick brooder box.  I used the and I was very pleased so I figured I would share my own results.

I’ll give you a basic idea of what I did but please go look at the tutorial because it has very good step by step directions and I want to make sure I give credit where it belongs.  : )

First I cut a rectangle in the top of my plastic tub.  (I used a pocket knife.)  Then I measured my strips of wood and cut them down to the right size.

Next I cut a piece of chicken wire I had left over from the chicken yard.  (I was out of hardware cloth or I would have used it.  My chicks stay indoors so the chicken wire is more to keep them from flying out then as protection from predators).

Then I drilled holes in the ends of my wood and the plastic tub for the bolts to go through.

I threaded the bolts with the chicken wire between the wood and the tub lid and screwed them on with a nut and washer.

Here are some close up pictures of the front and back of the brooder lid:

METypically hatcheries online offer both standard breeds and bantams. Bantams are fun hardy little chickens, they lay tiny eggs that kids especially love collecting. Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Lee Maine * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. If you want a mixture of both male and female then choosing a "straight run" will save you money and you will get a mixture of male and female chicks. You can also choose all males or all females too. * Weekly specials. Hatcheries have sales on chicks, you are likely to get a good deal if you are flexible with the breeds you are wanting. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Lee Maine is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Lee, Maine Baby chicks are very adorable and hard to withstand, yet it's ideal to prepare for their arrival prior to you get them. Prepare initially by compiling not just the right materials, however additionally the proper understanding to look after them. Raising baby chicks is fairly straightforward, you just have to supply them with the following: A clean as well as cozy habitat Lots of food as well as water Focus as well as love Environment Your environment can be a straightforward box, fish tank, cat service provider, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels as well as blankets (without loosened strings!) to begin, and after a couple of weeks use straw over paper. Keep in mind: Avoid making use of only paper or various other slipper surfaces-- or your chicks legs could expand malformed. You additionally require something to serve up food and water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water dish from the feed shop, or a pickle jar cover for food and an animal bird water dispenser from an animal shop. Likewise, as the chicks age you could present a perch right into the environment to get them trained on setting down. Warmth To maintain your chicks heat you need to supply them with a heat resource. This can be as simple as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from an equipment store, or an infrared reptile heat bulb also function extremely well (my recommendation). Chicks need this heat 24/7 till their downy fluff is changed with plumes (which can occupy to two months). The recently hatched out require a temperature level in between 90 and also 100 levels, as well as weekly this could be minimized by roughly 5 degrees or so. The warmth resource need to get on merely one side of the cage to enable chicks an array of temperature levels. The chicks are your ideal thermostat- if they are concealing in the opposite corner of your warmth lamp, you need to minimize the temperature level. If they are surrounding each various other under the heat (not just snuggling), you need to include some warmth. Housekeeping Sanitation is crucial and also it maintains your chicks healthy. Make sure to alter the bed linen commonly and also always offer clean food as well as water Food and water. Chicks grow very quickly which requires lots of tidy food and also water. Supply sufficient whatsoever times and inspect typically to avoid thirsty and starving chicks. Chick food is different compared to grown-up chicken food, and it comes in both medicated as well as non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the initial two months, after that switch over to a raiser food (~ 17 % protein) for one more 2 months, and after that to a slightly lower protein feed or a level feed (if you have layers). Soil Some chicks prefer to obtain a head start on taking filth baths, while others will not occupy that activity up until they are older. If you have the area in your chick room, introduce a tray of sand or filth for them to bathe in. Focus as well as love There are a couple of advantages to spending time with your chicks. Firstly, they will most likely bond with you and not flee as grownups. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and enjoy their actions, you could capture disease or various other troubles previously. Keep an eye out for hissing, limping, or other harmful indications. Make sure to also consider their poop, as looseness of the bowels could bring about matted feathers and also blocked cloaca. Last but not least, it is essential to watch out for social problems, such as the smallest chick obtaining badgered. Empty nest disorder So your chicks are now completely feathery and also its time for them to leave the safety and security of your residence as well as relocate outside right into a cage. Look into our area on chicken coops to find out more concerning coops and proper coop habitats.
