Building a Chicken Coop

Hey everyone, it’s been awhile since I posted anything about our life with chickens. As you may know about 6 weeks ago our family decided to adopt some baby chicks so we could get fresh organic eggs. I think now that we have chickens it’s more of having them as pets. =) I never realized how sweet they could be and the different personalities they could carry.  A lot has gone on since we have gotten them, both sad and happy stories but those will come in another post. Today I’m sharing with you our day when we built our chicken coop.

I’m not very creative when it comes to pulling something out of my head as far as building and neither is my hubby. If he had a piece of paper with how to build and what you need for materials we would be happy as a clam. We knew we had to build a coop for the chickens but wasn’t sure which way to go about it. We live in the city and can only have hens so our space is limited. None of the stores around here carried any chicken coops for sale so we browsed ebay and found a cute chicken coop that we ended up purchasing.

It came in multiple pieces and with some pretty crappy instructions actually. A couple of pieces were broken or cracked which kind of sucked for the amount we paid for it. Luckily the ebay seller reimbursed us for some of the cost.

We were able to put it together easily in about 4 hours given that we had to make modifications to it and fix what arrived broken.

I think it looks really cute and the chickens enjoy it.

Thanks for stopping by and be on the look out for our next chicken post, “Building a Chicken Run.”

Chicken housing is a situation in point. It's likewise a classic example of the good old bandwagon being jumped on as various potential poultry real estate specialists market a variety of accommodation claiming to be the excellent remedy to your chicken real estate needs. Commonly the rate looks desirable, the house looks desirable, heck even the clean-cut household standing there feeding the chickens look appealing. Definitely they know a high quality chicken house when they see one? There are many low-cost and also horrible coops flooding the marketplace. Typically these standardized designs are built of quick grown hardwood - come the very first decline of rainfall they swell, leaving you either defending a doorway that won't close, or tearing the door furniture off in a vain attempt to launch the squawking inhabitants. The initial cozy day suggests the hardwood dries and also cracks, the felt roofing bubbles and also boils, and also come nightfall the hens choose not to enter. This is not as a result of their dissatisfaction at the decrease of their when desirable building but because the hovel is now a sanctuary for, and also possibly crawling with, the poultry caretaker's nemesis, red mite. Add on that it said on the blurb that it would match four big chickens when that equipping density was based upon the Circle Line at 5pm on a Friday, and also just what are you entrusted? A few joints as well as some kindling. A decent coop for thee to 4 birds need to cost you approximately ₤ 300 though this can depend on whether you choose for a complimentary standing house or one with a run affixed. Presuming you are varying your birds in a big space as well as the pop opening door is big sufficient for the breed you maintain, then the primary needs of real estate boil down to 3 factors which will certainly define the number of birds the house will hold; perches, nest boxes and also air flow. Most breeds of chicken will certainly perch when they go to roost in the evening, this perch ought to preferably be 5-8cm wide with smoothed off sides so the foot sits pleasantly on it. The perch needs to be higher than the nest box access as chickens will certainly additionally normally try to find the highest point to perch. A perch below that will certainly have the birds roosting in the nest box overnight (which is incidentally when they generate one of the most poo) bring about dirtied eggs the list below day. They should not nonetheless be so high off the flooring of your home that leg injuries could occur when the bird comes down in the morning. Chickens need regarding 20cm of perch each (in tiny breeds this is obviously less), plus if greater than one perch is mounted in the house they should be greater than 30cm apart. They will hunker up with their next-door neighbors but are not that crazy about roosting with a beak in the bloomers of the bird in front. Ideally the house ought to have a the very least one nest box for every three birds and also these need to be off the ground as well as in the darkest area of the house. The house should have adequate air flow: without it after that condensation will certainly build up every night, also in the chilliest of climate. Be aware, ventilation deals with the principle of cozy air leaving through a high space attracting cooler air in from a reduced space - it's not a set of openings on other wall surfaces of the house and at the exact same level, this is exactly what's known as a draft. If you have a house with a run attached then the factors above are still true, however you should additionally think about the run dimension. The EU maximum legal stocking thickness for a cost-free array bird is (as well as let's face it, one of the motivations for keeping some hens in the house is perhaps improved or much better well-being) 2,500 birds each hectare, that's maximum one bird each 4m settled. Take a close check out several of the deal residences - it could well be the house has the ideal perches, right air flow as well as sufficient nest boxes for an affordable variety of birds, however will each of the chickens have anything greater than an A4 sized item of ground to invest the day on? And so as the saying goes, "you get what you spend for". You could believe you've got a bargain, yet you and your group could rue the day you did. Purchase the right house and also it will certainly last for a few decades, if not longer provided the appropriate treatment. In the long run your poultry and your fowl maintaining experience will certainly be a lot the much better for it.
