Picking up Chicks at the County Fair

Yep, I’m that kind of guy. I guess I just like the kind of chicks that hang out at the fair. What can I say?

HaHa… actually I hope you know I’m just playing with words there! We got a small batch of chicks (that’s baby chickens… just in case you didn’t know) from the County Fair. What happens at the fair is that they have an educational booth with eggs in a big see through incubator. These eggs hatch and the kids all go nuts. They love it. For the few days that the exhibit run they must hatch a few hundred chicks. These chicks are put in a large open display for the kids to look at.

If you find yourself at a County Fair with this type of exhibit, ask the volunteer if the chicks are for sale afterwards. At our Fair they have a list that you can put your name on. At closing time on the final day you stand in line ready to pay $0.50 per chick! Wow, that’s cheap 🙂

Enjoy here a short video showing the chicks after a few weeks.

and here is the young rooster after finding his voice!

How to Care for your new baby chickens in Tompkinsville, Kentucky Baby chicks are really adorable as well as tough to resist, however it's finest to prepare for their arrival prior to you get them. Prepare initially by compiling not just the correct materials, however likewise the proper expertise to look after them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably easy, you simply have to provide them with the following: A clean as well as cozy environment A lot of food and water Focus and love Habitat Your environment can be a basic box, aquarium, feline provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and also coverings (without any loose strings!) to begin, and after a few weeks use straw over paper. Note: Avoid utilizing just newspaper or various other slipper surfaces-- or your chicks legs can grow malformed. You also require something to provide food and water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water recipe from the feed store, or a pickle container cover for food as well as a pet bird water dispenser from a pet dog shop. Also, as the chicks get older you can introduce a perch into the habitat to get them trained on perching. Warmth To maintain your chicks warm you need to offer them with a warmth resource. This could be as straightforward as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from an equipment shop, or an infrared reptile warmth light bulb also work effectively (my recommendation). Chicks require this heat 24/7 until their downy fluff is replaced with feathers (which could use up to 2 months). The newly hatched need a temperature between 90 as well as 100 levels, and every week this can be minimized by roughly 5 degrees or so. The warmth resource ought to get on merely one side of the cage to permit chicks an array of temperature levels. The chicks are your finest thermostat- if they are hiding in the contrary corner of your warmth light, you need to decrease the temperature level. If they are smothering each various other under the warmth (not merely cuddling), you have to add some heat. Housekeeping Sanitation is key and it maintains your chicks healthy. Make certain to transform the bed linen commonly and constantly provide tidy food as well as water Food and also water. Chicks grow really fast which calls for a lot of clean food and water. Supply sufficient whatsoever times as well as inspect typically to prevent dehydrated and hungry chicks. Chick food is different compared to adult chicken food, and it can be found in both medicated as well as non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the initial 2 months, after that switch to a raiser food (~ 17 % protein) for one more 2 months, and then to a slightly reduced protein feed or a layer feed (if you have levels). Soil Some chicks prefer to obtain a head start on taking filth baths, while others won't take up that task till they are older. If you have the area in your chick enclosure, present a tray of sand or dirt for them to wash in. Focus and love There are a few benefits to hanging out with your chicks. Firstly, they will probably bond with you and also not run away as adults. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and enjoy their actions, you can capture health problem or other problems earlier. Watch out for wheezing, hopping, or various other undesirable indications. Make certain to additionally consider their poop, as diarrhea can result in matted plumes and blocked cloaca. Lastly, it is important to look out for social issues, such as the tiniest chick obtaining teased. Vacant nest disorder So your chicks are currently fully feathery and its time for them to leave the safety and security of your residence and also move outside into a cage. Take a look at our section on chicken coops for more information concerning cages and also correct coop environments.
