A Return to Chickens

It’s been a while. Probably a year in fact since we last had chickens.

We’ve had them off and on since we moved to the farm but, as I’ve told you before, paid us a few visits and then when I got pregnant with Baby G, Hubster sold them because, and I quote, he didn’t want to look after my dog, sheep, rabbits AND chickens while I was in confinement. A) what century are we in. Confinement. And B) why just the chickens?

Anyway I reluctantly allowed him to sell them. However the farm just doesn’t seem like a farm without hens so I had one of my small coops mended and yesterday, the children and I went to pick two ladies from a flock at another farm up the road.

Meet Beryl and Sylvia.

Beryl is a Black Rock and Sylvia (the more silvery one of the two) is a Speckeldy.

I only have one photo so far because the seemed a bit shy so I just left the with food and water to settle in.

I am so happy we have chickens again and I am going to encourage Boo to go and collect the eggs.

If you have ever wanted to keep chickens yourself, here is my

When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in New Haven, Kentucky Baby chicks are quite cute and also challenging to stand up to, but it's ideal to plan for their arrival before you obtain them. Prepare initially by gathering not just the proper materials, however also the appropriate expertise to care for them. Raising baby chicks is fairly basic, you simply have to give them with the following: A tidy and warm habitat A lot of food as well as water Interest and love Habitat Your environment can be an easy box, fish tank, feline service provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and blankets (without loosened strings!) to start, and after a couple of weeks make use of straw over paper. Keep in mind: Avoid using just paper or various other slipper surfaces-- or your chicks legs can grow misshapen. You additionally require something to dish out food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder and water meal from the feed shop, or a pickle container lid for food and also a pet bird water dispenser from a pet shop. Also, as the chicks age you can present a perch right into the habitat to get them trained on perching. Warmth To maintain your chicks warm you should supply them with a heat source. This can be as easy as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design light from an equipment shop, or an infrared reptile heat bulb likewise work very well (my suggestion). Chicks require this heat 24/7 until their downy fluff is replaced with plumes (which can occupy to two months). The newly hatched out require a temperature level between 90 and 100 levels, and every week this can be reduced by around 5 degrees or so. The warmth resource ought to be on simply one side of the cage to enable chicks a variety of temperatures. The chicks are your ideal thermometer- if they are concealing in the other corner of your heat light, you need to minimize the temperature. If they are surrounding each other under the heat (not just curling up), you have to include some warmth. House cleaning Sanitation is crucial as well as it keeps your chicks healthy and balanced. Be sure to transform the bed linen usually and always provide tidy food and water Food and also water. Chicks grow quite quick which needs a lot of tidy food and water. Supply sufficient in any way times and inspect frequently to avoid dehydrated as well as starving chicks. Chick food is various compared to adult chicken food, and also it comes in both medicated and also non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the first 2 months, after that switch over to a raiser food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for another 2 months, and afterwards to a somewhat reduced healthy protein feed or a layer feed (if you have layers). Dirt Some chicks want to get a head start on taking dirt bathrooms, while others won't take up that task till they are older. If you have the area in your chick unit, present a tray of sand or filth for them to bathe in. Interest and also love There are a couple of advantages to hanging out with your chicks. First off, they will more than likely bond with you and not flee as adults. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and also view their behavior, you can catch illness or other issues earlier. Keep an eye out for wheezing, limping, or other undesirable indications. Make certain to additionally take a look at their poop, as diarrhea can result in matted plumes and clogged up cloaca. Finally, it is important to look out for social problems, such as the tiniest chick getting picked on. Empty nest syndrome So your chicks are currently fully feathery as well as its time for them to leave the security of your residence and also move outside right into a cage. Have a look at our part on chicken cages to find out more about cages and proper coop environments.
