What’s Wrong with My Chickens?

Thanks for stopping by! If you're interested in healthy eating and subscribe to get regular email updates.

I had a recipe to share today, but Elena woke up really early today and changed my usual blogging schedule. But I had a question for any chicken farmers out there. Our chickens have given us no trouble at all, but we have recently noticed them starting to pull out their feathers. We didn’t think too much of it, because it was only here and there. Now they are pulling them out rapidly (this has only happened in the last few days) and they are getting quite scrawny looking. It’s so sad.

What in the world is making them do this?

Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

How to Care for your new baby chickens in Danville, Kentucky Baby chicks are quite charming and difficult to withstand, however it's best to plan for their arrival before you obtain them. Prepare initially by collecting not only the appropriate products, however likewise the appropriate expertise to take care of them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably easy, you merely should provide them with the following: A clean as well as cozy environment Lots of food and also water Interest as well as love Habitat Your environment could be a basic box, fish tank, cat carrier, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and blankets (with no loosened strings!) to start, and also after a couple of weeks use straw over paper. Keep in mind: Avoid using only newspaper or various other sandal surfaces-- or your chicks legs could grow malformed. You likewise require something to dish out food as well as water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water recipe from the feed store, or a pickle container lid for food and also an animal bird water dispenser from a pet dog store. Likewise, as the chicks grow older you could present a perch into the environment to obtain them educated on setting down. Heat To keep your chicks warm you should supply them with a heat source. This can be as straightforward as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design lamp from an equipment store, or an infrared reptile heat bulb additionally work effectively (my referral). Chicks require this heat 24/7 till their downy fluff is replaced with feathers (which could use up to 2 months). The newly hatched out need a temperature level between 90 and 100 levels, and also weekly this can be lowered by about 5 levels or so. The heat source need to be on simply one side of the cage to permit chicks a variety of temperature levels. The chicks are your finest thermostat- if they are concealing in the opposite edge of your warmth light, you should reduce the temperature level. If they are smothering each various other under the warmth (not simply snuggling), you need to include some heat. Housekeeping Sanitation is key and also it keeps your chicks healthy. Be sure to alter the bedding frequently and also constantly supply tidy food and water Food as well as water. Chicks grow quite quick which requires a lot of clean food as well as water. Offer enough at all times as well as examine commonly to avoid thirsty and hungry chicks. Chick food is various than grown-up chicken food, as well as it comes in both medicated and non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the initial two months, after that switch to a raiser food (~ 17 % protein) for one more 2 months, and then to a slightly lower healthy protein feed or a layer feed (if you have layers). Soil Some chicks want to obtain a running start on taking dirt baths, while others will not take up that activity until they are older. If you have the area in your chick room, present a tray of sand or filth for them to bathe in. Interest as well as love There are a couple of advantages to spending time with your chicks. To start with, they will certainly more than likely bond with you and not run away as adults. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and also see their habits, you could capture illness or various other troubles earlier. Keep an eye out for wheezing, limping, or various other undesirable signs. Make certain to additionally look at their poop, as looseness of the bowels can result in matted feathers and also clogged cloaca. Finally, it is necessary to look out for social issues, such as the littlest chick getting picked on. Vacant nest disorder So your chicks are currently completely feathery and also its time for them to leave the security of your house and also relocate outside right into a cage. Have a look at our part on chicken cages to learn more about cages as well as proper cage habitats.
