Picking up Chicks at the County Fair

Yep, I’m that kind of guy. I guess I just like the kind of chicks that hang out at the fair. What can I say?

HaHa… actually I hope you know I’m just playing with words there! We got a small batch of chicks (that’s baby chickens… just in case you didn’t know) from the County Fair. What happens at the fair is that they have an educational booth with eggs in a big see through incubator. These eggs hatch and the kids all go nuts. They love it. For the few days that the exhibit run they must hatch a few hundred chicks. These chicks are put in a large open display for the kids to look at.

If you find yourself at a County Fair with this type of exhibit, ask the volunteer if the chicks are for sale afterwards. At our Fair they have a list that you can put your name on. At closing time on the final day you stand in line ready to pay $0.50 per chick! Wow, that’s cheap 🙂

Enjoy here a short video showing the chicks after a few weeks.

and here is the young rooster after finding his voice!

How to Care for your new baby chickens in Burkesville, Kentucky Baby chicks are extremely adorable as well as hard to stand up to, but it's best to plan for their arrival prior to you obtain them. Prepare first by collecting not only the appropriate products, but additionally the correct expertise to look after them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably simple, you simply need to offer them with the following: A tidy and also warm and comfortable habitat A lot of food and also water Attention as well as love Habitat Your environment can be a simple box, aquarium, pet cat service provider, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels as well as blankets (without any loosened strings!) to begin, and after a couple of weeks utilize straw over newspaper. Keep in mind: Avoid using only paper or various other sandal surfaces-- or your chicks legs could expand malformed. You additionally require something to provide food and water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water recipe from the feed store, or a pickle jar lid for food and an animal bird water dispenser from a pet shop. Additionally, as the chicks get older you could present a perch right into the habitat to obtain them trained on perching. Warmth To keep your chicks heat you have to supply them with a heat source. This could be as straightforward as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from an equipment shop, or an infrared reptile heat light bulb also work very well (my suggestion). Chicks require this heat 24/7 up until their downy fluff is changed with feathers (which could take up to 2 months). The recently hatched out require a temperature level in between 90 as well as 100 levels, as well as weekly this could be decreased by approximately 5 levels or so. The heat source must be on merely one side of the cage to enable chicks a range of temperature levels. The chicks are your finest thermometer- if they are hiding in the contrary edge of your heat lamp, you have to reduce the temperature level. If they are surrounding each other under the warmth (not simply cuddling), you have to put some warmth. Home cleaning Tidiness is crucial and also it keeps your chicks healthy and balanced. Make certain to transform the bed linen frequently and consistently offer tidy food and water Food as well as water. Chicks expand very quickly which calls for lots of clean food as well as water. Give sufficient in any way times and inspect commonly to avoid thirsty and starving chicks. Chick food is various compared to grown-up chicken food, and it can be found in both medicated and also non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the initial 2 months, then change to a grower food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for one more 2 months, and afterwards to a somewhat lower healthy protein feed or a level feed (if you have levels). Soil Some chicks like to obtain a head start on taking filth baths, while others will not take up that task till they are older. If you have the space in your chick room, introduce a tray of sand or dust for them to bathe in. Interest as well as love There are a couple of benefits to spending time with your chicks. To start with, they will certainly more than likely bond with you as well as not run away as adults. Second, if you examine your chicks daily as well as see their actions, you can capture ailment or other issues earlier. Keep an eye out for wheezing, hopping, or various other harmful indications. Make sure to also consider their poop, as diarrhea can lead to matted plumes and clogged up cloaca. Last but not least, it is essential to watch out for social problems, such as the littlest chick obtaining teased. Vacant nest disorder So your chicks are now fully feathery and its time for them to leave the safety of your house and relocate outside right into a cage. Have a look at our area on chicken cages to learn more concerning coops and also correct coop environments.
