New Baby Chicks Have Arrived

I just had to share some pictures of our newest babies.  They are black sexlinks and one golden sexlink.  They are sooo cute.  We just got them yesterday, but they are 10 days old.  Since it has done nothing but rain, 2.75 inches between yesterday and today, they are safe and dry in the garage.  When everything dries out they will go to the outdoor brooder.

I’ll post more pictures as time goes.

KYTypically hatcheries online offer both standard breeds and bantams. Bantams are fun hardy little chickens, they lay tiny eggs that kids especially love collecting. Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Bremen Kentucky * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Bremen Kentucky is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Bremen, Kentucky Baby chicks are quite charming and also difficult to withstand, yet it's best to plan for their arrival before you get them. Prepare initially by collecting not only the right products, but likewise the proper knowledge to care for them. Raising baby chicks is fairly straightforward, you just need to give them with the following: A clean as well as warm habitat A lot of food and water Focus and also love Environment Your environment could be a basic box, fish tank, feline service provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and blankets (with no loosened strings!) to start, as well as after a couple of weeks make use of straw over newspaper. Keep in mind: Avoid using just newspaper or various other slipper surface areas-- or your chicks legs can expand misshapen. You also require something to provide food and water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water recipe from the feed store, or a pickle jar lid for food and a pet dog bird water dispenser from a pet dog shop. Likewise, as the chicks age you can present a perch right into the habitat to get them trained on setting down. Heat To maintain your chicks warm you should provide them with a heat source. This could be as basic as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design lamp from an equipment shop, or an infrared reptile warmth bulb likewise work extremely well (my referral). Chicks need this heat 24/7 till their downy fluff is replaced with plumes (which can take up to 2 months). The recently hatched need a temperature in between 90 and 100 levels, as well as every week this could be decreased by about 5 levels or so. The warmth resource must be on just one side of the cage to allow chicks a range of temperatures. The chicks are your ideal thermometer- if they are hiding in the contrary edge of your warmth lamp, you have to lower the temperature. If they are smothering each various other under the heat (not merely cuddling), you should put some warmth. Housekeeping Sanitation is crucial and also it maintains your chicks healthy and balanced. Be sure to change the bedding commonly as well as consistently supply clean food as well as water Food and also water. Chicks grow very quickly which calls for plenty of tidy food and water. Supply enough at all times and also inspect usually to avoid parched and also hungry chicks. Chick food is various than grown-up chicken food, and also it comes in both medicated and non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the first 2 months, after that switch over to a raiser food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for another 2 months, then to a slightly lower protein feed or a layer feed (if you have layers). Soil Some chicks prefer to get a head start on taking dust bathrooms, while others will not use up that task up until they are older. If you have the room in your chick enclosure, present a tray of sand or dust for them to shower in. Focus as well as love There are a couple of benefits to hanging out with your chicks. To start with, they will more than likely bond with you as well as not run away as grownups. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and see their habits, you can catch disease or other troubles earlier. Watch out for hissing, hopping, or other unhealthy signs. Make certain to additionally look at their poop, as diarrhea can lead to matted feathers and also obstructed cloaca. Finally, it is necessary to keep an eye out for social problems, such as the littlest chick obtaining badgered. Empty nest disorder So your chicks are now fully feathery and its time for them to leave the security of your house as well as relocate outside right into a coop. Have a look at our area on chicken cages to get more information regarding coops and appropriate cage environments.
