On Saturday, we butchered 35 meat chickens in 3 1/2  hours!! It was a lot of fun…but a little cold.    Daddy took care of the heads, wings and legs. Jessie, Lyssa and Annie skinned them and Suzanna and Cassie gutted them. At the end we all cut up the pieces and bagged them. Bekah and Charissa were our photographers!!    Here are a few pictures…

All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Garden Plain, Kansas Baby chicks are really cute and tough to stand up to, yet it's best to plan for their arrival prior to you obtain them. Prepare first by collecting not just the correct products, yet additionally the proper understanding to care for them. Raising baby chicks is relatively straightforward, you just have to give them with the following: A clean and also warm habitat A lot of food and also water Attention and also love Environment Your environment can be a simple box, aquarium, feline provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and blankets (without loosened strings!) to begin, as well as after a couple of weeks utilize straw over paper. Keep in mind: Avoid utilizing just newspaper or various other sandal surface areas-- or your chicks legs could grow misshapen. You likewise need something to serve up food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water recipe from the feed shop, or a pickle jar cover for food as well as a family pet bird water dispenser from a family pet shop. Also, as the chicks age you could present a perch into the habitat to obtain them trained on perching. Warmth To keep your chicks warm you have to give them with a warmth source. This could be as easy as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from an equipment store, or an infrared reptile heat bulb additionally work extremely well (my recommendation). Chicks need this warmth 24/7 up until their downy fluff is replaced with feathers (which could occupy to 2 months). The newly hatched require a temperature in between 90 and 100 degrees, as well as every week this can be decreased by around 5 degrees or so. The heat resource should be on merely one side of the cage to permit chicks a range of temperature levels. The chicks are your best thermometer- if they are hiding in the opposite corner of your warmth lamp, you need to minimize the temperature level. If they are surrounding each various other under the heat (not merely curling up), you should include some heat. Home cleaning Cleanliness is vital and it keeps your chicks healthy and balanced. Make sure to transform the bedding frequently and constantly give tidy food and also water Food and water. Chicks grow extremely quickly which calls for lots of clean food as well as water. Offer sufficient whatsoever times and examine typically to prevent parched and hungry chicks. Chick food is different compared to adult chicken food, as well as it is available in both medicated and non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the very first 2 months, then switch over to a raiser food (~ 17 % protein) for another 2 months, and then to a somewhat reduced protein feed or a layer feed (if you have layers). Soil Some chicks want to obtain a running start on taking dust baths, while others will not use up that task up until they are older. If you have the area in your chick enclosure, introduce a tray of sand or dust for them to bathe in. Attention and love There are a couple of advantages to spending time with your chicks. Firstly, they will probably bond with you and also not run away as grownups. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily as well as view their habits, you can catch disease or various other problems previously. Watch out for wheezing, limping, or various other unhealthy indications. Make sure to additionally consider their poop, as looseness of the bowels could bring about matted plumes and also clogged up cloaca. Finally, it is very important to keep an eye out for social issues, such as the smallest chick getting picked on. Vacant nest syndrome So your chicks are now completely feathered and also its time for them to leave the safety and security of your residence and also move outside into a cage. Look into our area on chicken coops for more information regarding cages and also proper cage environments.
