Building a Chicken Coop

Hey everyone, it’s been awhile since I posted anything about our life with chickens. As you may know about 6 weeks ago our family decided to adopt some baby chicks so we could get fresh organic eggs. I think now that we have chickens it’s more of having them as pets. =) I never realized how sweet they could be and the different personalities they could carry.  A lot has gone on since we have gotten them, both sad and happy stories but those will come in another post. Today I’m sharing with you our day when we built our chicken coop.

I’m not very creative when it comes to pulling something out of my head as far as building and neither is my hubby. If he had a piece of paper with how to build and what you need for materials we would be happy as a clam. We knew we had to build a coop for the chickens but wasn’t sure which way to go about it. We live in the city and can only have hens so our space is limited. None of the stores around here carried any chicken coops for sale so we browsed ebay and found a cute chicken coop that we ended up purchasing.

It came in multiple pieces and with some pretty crappy instructions actually. A couple of pieces were broken or cracked which kind of sucked for the amount we paid for it. Luckily the ebay seller reimbursed us for some of the cost.

We were able to put it together easily in about 4 hours given that we had to make modifications to it and fix what arrived broken.

I think it looks really cute and the chickens enjoy it.

Thanks for stopping by and be on the look out for our next chicken post, “Building a Chicken Run.”

Poultry housing is a proceedings in point. It's also a traditional example of the excellent old bandwagon being jumped on as numerous potential fowl housing experts peddle a range of cottage claiming to be the excellent remedy to your chicken housing demands. Commonly the rate looks eye-catching, the house looks desirable, hell also the clean-cut family standing there feeding the chickens look desirable. Certainly they recognize a high quality chicken house when they see one? There are numerous inexpensive as well as nasty cages swamping the marketplace. More often than not these mass produced models are constructed of quick grown up hardwood - come the initial decline of rainfall they swell, leaving you either barricading a door that won't shut, or ripping the door furnishings off in a vain attempt to release the squawking inhabitants. The very first warm day suggests the timber dries and also splits, the felt roofing bubbles as well as boils, and come nightfall the chickens refuse to go in. This is not because of their frustration at the decrease of their as soon as desirable residential property but due to the fact that the hovel is now a place for, as well as probably crawling with, the poultry keeper's bane, red mite. Add on that it claimed on the blurb that it would suit four huge chickens when that equipping thickness was based upon the Circle Line at 5pm on a Friday, and just what are you left with? A number of hinges as well as some kindling. A decent coop for thee to 4 birds ought to cost you approximately ₤ 300 though this could depend upon whether you elect for a free standing house or one with a run attached. Presuming you are varying your birds in a big room as well as the pop opening doorway is big sufficient for the type you keep, then the main requirements of housing come down to 3 factors which will certainly specify the variety of birds your home will hold; perches, nest boxes and ventilation. A lot of breeds of chicken will perch when they go to roost in the evening, this perch should ideally be 5-8cm wide with smoothed off sides so the foot rests conveniently on it. The perch needs to be above the nest box access as chickens will also naturally search for the highest point to perch. A perch lower than that will have the birds roosting in the nest box over night (which is by the way when they produce the most poo) causing stained eggs the following day. They shouldn't nonetheless be so high off the floor of your house that leg injuries might occur when the bird comes down in the early morning. Chickens need concerning 20cm of perch each (in small breeds this is certainly less), plus if greater than one perch is set up in your house they should be more than 30cm apart. They will hunker up with their neighbors but are not that crazy about roosting with a beak in the bloomers of the bird ahead. Ideally your house must have a least one nest box for each 3 birds and also these must be off the ground as well as in the darkest area of the house. The house should have sufficient ventilation: without it after that condensation will accumulate every evening, even in the coldest of weather condition. Understand, ventilation deals with the concept of warm air leaving with a high space drawing cooler air in from a lower void - it's not a collection of holes on other walls of your house as well as at the exact same level, this is just what's called a draught. If you have a house with a run connected then the points above are still true, yet you need to likewise consider the run dimension. The EU optimum legal stocking density for a free array bird is (and also let's encounter it, among the motivations for maintaining some hens in the house is potentially improved or better welfare) 2,500 birds per hectare, that's optimal one bird per 4m made even. Take a close check out a few of the deal residences - it could well be your home has the ideal perches, right air flow and also sufficient nest boxes for a reasonable variety of birds, but will each of the chickens have anything greater than an A4 sized item of ground to spend the day on? Therefore as the claiming goes, "you get what you spend for". You may think you've grabbed a deal, but you and also your group could possibly rue the day you did. Acquisition the right house and it will last for a couple of years, if not longer given the correct treatment. In the end your chicken as well as your fowl keeping encounter will certainly be much the much better for it.
